2012 Plus Pack restoring to a logical partition

Thread needs solution

I have a very old program on an old XP machine that I want to clone on to a logical drive on a laptop. I was wondering if anyone has done a universal restore without the operating system to a logical drive onto a machine with dissimilar hardware. I'm able to select the boot drive (F12) so would be able to boot off of C or D. I suppose you could go into the bios after the restore and reset the primary boot drive to C after the universal restore. The online "documentation" says to make the "restore to" drive primary. Is this mandatory or selectable?
