2021 Version of Acronis TrueImage (perpetual license) Builds Full Backup from Prior Backup INSTEAD of Disk Contents
OS corrupted. Reformatted disk and did a restore. When I booted to the restored drive it had the 2019 version of Acronis installed instead of 2021 version, all the scheduled backups were from over a year ago when I was running 2019 version. Other recently installed software was missing. All the backups themselves were from the 2021 version with the latest being a full backup on 9/20.
The scheduled backups that created my backups were not there, and software such as PaintShop Pro 2022 and TrueImage 2021 that I had installed were not there.
I used TrueImage 2021 to mount my September and August backups to a drive letter so I could see what was in them. I searched on *.* -kind:folder and sorted by date. The most recent file was in APRIL!!! About the time I installed Acronis 2021.
Looking at several full backup sets in August and September, somehow since upgrading to Acronis 2021 it has just taken the previous backup set and used it to build a new FULL backup. Totally IGNORING what is on my disk.
It feels like the only way to have a valid backup set is to delete ALL your backup sets BEFORE doing a backup. OR, will that just error because it has nothing to use to build a backup?
Appreciate any help.
PS Why is backup software always good at doing backups but horrible at doing restores. The ONLY value seems to be to restore individual files!!!

It is always recommended to either do regular checks that backup tasks are running successfully and/or use the Notification option to be sent an email with a copy of the backup task log that you can review to check the status.
In addition to having upgraded from TrueImage 2019 to 2021, I bought a new 8 TB internal disk drive. So I changed the backup location to that drive. The disk was filling up with new backups. The status of the backups and validations were successful. I watched as many were being made. The backups from April were on a removable drive that had been disconnected once I got the internal drive. I had a full backup in August, September, and October, each with incremental backups. They were also of different sizes.
1) Acronis maintains all those backups existed on my new drive (I guess when Amazon shipped it and somehow survived a reformat) and only the modified dates were being changed. They don't have an explanation of how the files and their sizes were being hidden until date Acronis decided to make them visible and put a current modified date on them.
2) Acronis reconfigured my backup set right after I did a restore using it. Then immediately kicked it off and said goodbye. That caused an incremental backup to the set on which I had done the restore. That incremental backup was the same size as a full backup. Why wasn't it tiny since it only had an upgrade of TrueImage and a boot that changed?
3) When it was building a full backup or incremental, where was it getting the April 16th data? REMEMBER, the drive with that backup hadn't been mounted for months!!!
4) Why weren't the incremental backups at least getting the difference between April and the date of the incremental.
