225 GB unnecessary UN-ALLOCATED SPACE

Thread needs solution

img of my "Computer Management" window:
http://i35.tinypic.com/29xgpe0.jpg

1)I had 225 GB of free space.

2)I made a ASZ partion on 10GB in that free space.

3)After the ASZ partion was successfully created...I saw in "Computer Management" window [1.]10GB un-identified partion(ASZ), [2.]***unnecessary 225 UN-ALLOCATED(BLACK)*** and [3.]225 GB free space(GREEN).

4)So I decided to remove ASZ to see if it solves the problem.

6)After removing, and still finding that BLACK block in "Computer Management" window....
I tried allocated those 225(approx) GB free space as new V,Q,Y & P drives just now.

7)But I still see 225 GB UN-ALLOCATED????

8)DISK 3 IS OF 1TB capacity. i.e. APPROX 930GB.
But now it shows http://i48.tinypic.com/28jbjag.jpg ***1.2GB***

PS: I before creating ASZ, I had also created partition s: image and had tried mounting it to look at contents.

Any Help will be most appreciated.

Check item 22 inside my signature index. This may help. Your major problem is that the space is between other partitions.

In item 4 above, did you open TrueImage and perform the deletion from within TrueImage? If so, it usually gives you some options as to where to put the unallocated space.

Do you have any disk partition tools such as Acronis Disk Director 10, etc?

What is that you want to do with the space? One option would be to create a new partition in it if you have a free drive letter.

the problem about space between partitions was not there before.
before it was 225GB (GREEN COLOR BLOCK) free space extended partition.
It went black(un-allocated) as I used your ASZ.

I have Acronis Disk Director 10.

Partition Magic said there was block overlap problem.
That is why my 930GB drive appeared as 1.2TB drive.

I repaired partition and got this: http://i49.tinypic.com/izqbk8.jpg

PRESENT PROBLEMS:
1)When I run check disk I get error number 1611- BAD SYSTEM FILE NAME, file 9(48) and file 11(48). What the hell is this?
2)I have a big almost 275GB partition which I dunno how to split.

Qs>how do I use Acronis Disk Director to get that 275GB in extended partition as it was before I did ASZ partion? And what is that error suppose to mean.

I don't have much faith in Partition Magic as it was written long before these new disk sizes.

When you created the Secure zone, it needed space to exist. You specified which partition was to give up the space for the SZ. When you did not want the SZ anymore, you need to use TrueImage to delete the SZ and TI will ask you to specify which partitions are to receive the reallocation of space.

I cannot guarantee it but I would try to recreate the Secure Zone again choosing the same specifications as original. Then try deleting the SZ from within the TrueImge program. Hopefully, it will act as it always does and give you the option of where to re-assign you originally assigned. If you have a spare drive, perhaps you can recreate the partitions sizes manually, and then copy the partition contents into the spare drive.

I do not have DD10 but I believe you can use it to check the health of your partitions and manually reallocate your space requirement between partitions. This should be done when booted from the DD10 Rescue CD. Hopefully, you have some sort of backups as a safety precaution in case something goes wrong.

The problem happens whenever you mix Primary and Logical partitions. Disk Management does not like this and will not display the partitions correctly. When this happens, it's important not to use Disk Management to make any partitioning changes as it will most likely cause data loss. Instead, use DD or another partitioning program that sees it correctly. Here is a link to a post in the old forum that shows an example.

You should be able to use DD to resize the 276GB partition smaller and one of the Logical partitions larger to move the space back inside the Extended Partition Container.

Note: It's strongly recommended to have an Entire Disk Image backup of the drive prior to making any partitioning changes.

@GroverH
I don't get how creating ASZ again is gonna solve my problem.

@MudCrab
After running DD:

Can anyone tell me exactly what am I suppose to do to break that BIG 275GB partition into (3) partitions.
I know that Microsoft allows 3 Primary partitions and 1 extended partition.
from pic. I have z,x and T(275GB) as primary.

how am I to divide the T:(primary) drive into:
a_)extended partition (75 x 3)=225GB
b_)and one primary (50)GB
(....as it was before I ran ASZ)

Please help, I don't want to screw up this anymore.
And DD interface looks like an Aeroplane controls. So many buttons there.

gaurav b:

To get Windows Disk Management to display the correct partition layout you must make sure that all of the logical partitions are adjacent to each other. From your diagram I would proceed as follows with Disk Director:

1. Delete the T: partition
2. Move the X: partition all the way to the end of the disk (use the Resize function to do this). At this point you should have 276.1 GB of unallocated space to the right of the existing logical partitions.
3. Create your three 75 GB logical partitions in the unallocated space. All of the logical partitions should now be adjacent to each other.
4. Create your one primary partition in the remaining unallocated space.

At this point you should have the following partitions in this order: Primary Z:, 9 logical partitions, all adjacent to each other, Primary (new), Primary X:

@KOLO

*1)I deleted T:

*2)When I select Resize X: I get ---

A_) http://i50.tinypic.com/2q1xco9.jpg

B_) http://i46.tinypic.com/294kuqe.jpg

*3)As you can see... I get UN-ALLOCATED SPACE AFTER = 0 BYTES
Should I still continue with resize-ing ????

gaurav b:

Yes, that is correct. In your second graphic (B), the unallocated space is the space after (to the right of) the X: partition. It should be zero, meaning that you have moved the X: partition all the way to the end of the drive.

After committing this operation you should see 276.1 GB of unallocated space between the end of the current logical partitions and your X: partition.

Yes, continue...

Here is my solution for deleting an ASZ I created within Home 2010 on an external USB 200GB drive and then gain back the "unallocated space " on the drive. Worked like a charm.

1. Delete the ASZ from within Acronis Home 2010.
2. Disk Management will show old ASZ as unallocated space, which DManagement cannot resize for you, not a function built into DM.
3. Go to http://www.easeus.com/download.htm and download their FREE Partiton Master Home Edition, about halfway down the page.

For the most part, that's all this tool does; resizes partitions with available space. They have some other great disk and file system tools tools you can demo, that are great.

Before running the tool, I would suggest backing up the data on the live partition. I did not have any problems without a backup, but you never know what can happen. Install and run the application and follow the intuitive interface, pretty self explanatory.

As a precaution, after the process was done (20 seconds), I ran chkdsk /r on the drive. And that was it. You would think this option would be built into Acronis Home 2010 after you delete a SZ extended-logical partition, but it isn't.

Charles,
Yes, a partition manager tool works just fine. Another good one and free is the Partition Wizard.

True Image does offer a method to return the sz space back to the regular partition but you must open TrueImage and perform the Secure zone maintenance from within the program. The user gets to specify the target for the unallocated space.

I have looked high and low and see no option within TI 2010 to resize a disks partition to get back unallocated space after deleting a SZ. Is it a CLI command?

Can you point me to where it is, it would be good to know as an FYI...

Thanks for responding..

The Secure is created by TrueImage and it must be deleted by TrueImage in order to have the opportunity to reassign the un-allocated space back into the regular partitions.

2010 User manual wrote:
14.4. Deleting Acronis Secure Zone
1. If you want to remove the Acronis Secure Zone, select Tools & Utilities Manage Acronis Secure Zone in the main menu and then choose Remove Acronis Secure Zone.
2. Select the partitions to which you want to add the space freed from the zone. If you select several partitions, the space will be distributed proportionally to each partition.
3. Next, you will see a list of briefly described operations to be performed on partitions (disks).
After you click Proceed, Acronis True Image Home will start deleting the zone. Progress will be reflected in the opened window. If necessary, you can stop the procedure by clicking Cancel. However, the procedure will be canceled only after the current operation is finished.
Zone deletion might take several minutes or longer. Please wait until the whole procedure is finished. Acronis Secure Zone deletion will automatically destroy all backups stored in the zone.

Not sure if you are referring to my post or not, but the above you are referencing is not mine. Not sure who's it is. Anyhow, I deleted the SZ from within TrueImage. When I saw there was no option during or after the operation within TrueImage to reclaim the unallocated space on the drive, I turned to a 3rd party tool and it worked great.

You said there IS a way to reclaim unallocated space from within TrueImage, I just wanted to know "how". So if you can point me to a "how to" that would be great.
