Access during Backup denied

Thread needs solution

Hello!

While surfing (no other Programs started/running) suddenly I saw an Info-Window on very bottom right Side, stating that «Access to File or Directory has been denied» which is the reason for pausing the Backup by Acronis.

(I tryed to include Image of that Info-Window, however did not succeed. Is it possible at all?

(And: What's the meaning/function of «IMCE». If clicked, I see kind of Explorer-Window. Was able to upload Image-File, but after Click on «Insert File» (I expected Image-File to be included in my Thread) nothing obvious happens. What is this supposed to be good for? Search on http://www.acronis.com/de-de/support/ for «IMCE» results in no Result!).

Please see attached Screenshots:
1. First Info/Window saying «Access to File or Directory was denied».
2. Situation on «Acronis True Image Home 2015» (up-to-date) Main-Screen encountered when opening.

How to solve this Problem?

How to prefend another Situation like that?

Thanks and Regards,

Tamaleus

BTW:
After having attached Files (2 in my case) there is no «Preview»-Button anymore ;-(
It's much more comfortable to cross-check and read written Text again and look for Typing-Errors.

Tamaleus, is the same system for the problem reported in your post https://forum.acronis.com/forum/127447 with the G Data security application that is giving access denied for one specific file it considers to be malware?

What is shown in the Acronis log files for the backup task encountering this error?

Please download / use the Log File Viewer app from the link in my signature below for easy access to the log file content.

Hi Steve, again ;-)

1. Yes Sir, I'm talking about same PC/System/Equipment.

2. According to latest G DATA Feedback, «RASConnections.zip» (probably accidentially they refer to the Zip-File sent in, because .exe-File was not accepted and therefore I had to wrap it into «Container», so, that's why I'm still waiting for final confirmation that it was, as me assuming, when saying Infection of «RASConnections.exe» by «Gen:Variant.Jaik.13836» was wrong and False-Positive only.

3. Meanwhile driven crazy by all these combating Messages from Acronis and G DATA, I declared full access for my user to any Hardware-Unit, although I don't know what or who else has or takes access to any of my Hardware-Drives or Directories. I just do not have the time anylonger to run after all these - not much saying - Messages and Processes not working anymore like they did for years so far and I have no clue, where this Mess comes from. I' not aware of having done something that might have caused this «Disaster». And if G DATA fights Acronis I do not want to stand in between, know what I mean ;-)

4. During me writing this Text, another Acronis-Backup-Job crashed this way, that entire Application was shut down. After Re-Start of Software, I was shown a Feedback-Form asked to be fulfilled. I did so and sent Acronis - again - all I have: Describing Text as well as aprox. 12 Screenshots. That's all I can do.

Looking forward to final Conclusions and may be Tipps on how to define/declare which Option in which way to reach smooth System.

That's all I can say for now. Thank you again, Steve, for all your Goodwill! I shall see what happens next ;-)

Regards

PS: Tryed to attach ZIP-File containing all relevant Screenshots. Result -> Forum-Page crashed:
(«An HTTP error 0 occured. <br />/comment-upload/js»). Thereafer another Error-Message!

I can tell you: I'm really p... by now.

PS2: In case someone is interessted in «Collection of all Acronis- and G DATA-Screenshots», please let me know and suggest way of transmission.

Martin, have you tried adding the RASConnections.exe to the list of Exclusions for your Acronis backup task - this may be the simplest way of still achieving a good backup without this access issue?  (You have the file on a CD per your earlier update).

The other suggestion is to try using the AVG Rescue CD (which can be either on CD or USB stick) and run this as a standalone boot to scan your system and check whether that objects to the same file or not?  This is a tool that I use when I am dealing with an unknown system that may have virus infections that I want to check before letting it near to my network or other systems!  If you have a recognised ethernet or wireless card, AVG will update its virus definitions from the Net before running a scan.  You would need to provide the wireless access key.

Steve, it's still not possible to answer in Opera!

What do you mean with: «check whether that objects to the same file or not»?

G DATA now confirmed, that RASConnections.exe - as well as for zip-file - Virus-Alert was False-Positive! «By mistake», they said.

File RASConnections.exe deleted on System (all drives, all copies) anyway.

Any access-limititation and/or -restriction in G DATAs «Hardware-Control» (Gerätekontrolle), previously defined for my User (but not my User-Name; another problem of Software-Giants ;-) have been deleted (unfortunately this messages have been confirmed by another person (so called Supporter) who changed SSD-Drive (but another one than the one in question) and did not tell me about these new Settings of Access-Limitatios (Had good and long telefon-conversation with guy from G DATA-Support-Center).

Since all these problems (including message after message until final crash of Acronis described in previous Entry) happened for the last time yesterday - I hope - I'm currently expecting todays Backup only. If that works and runs through without any Stop and/or Pause, I'm out of this Thread ... and shall not worry about any «Why's» or «by Whom's». I just do not have the time to do so, because it won't change the past!

Let you know about latest Backup-Experience. Thanks again.

Martin, for the Opera issue, you may need to disable the built-in page blocker / advert blocker - that's what I had to do.

When I wrote: «check whether that objects to the same file or not» - this was in the context of running a standalone / offline AVG antivirus scan, but given that G Data have already confirmed to you that this is a false positive, then that action is now redundant.

Hope the next backup goes smoothly for you.

Steve, Sorry for letting you wait for such a long time. Me and my it-supporter were still trying very hard to get sorted out, why acronis denies to backup as it did bevor. after endless testing and re-starting backups again and again, my it-supporter broke up hard-drive-case to check and reformat and plug-in directly to the pc, because she came to the final conclusion it might be an usb-problem. But this does not to seem the explanation either. Yesterday she read another trouble-ticket from someone having same problems that could be solved by new Western Digital driver sent to that customer by WD-Support. Now she is expecting answer to her own request. As soon as we know more, I shall let you know again.

PS: Finally even Acronis sent reply yesterday as an answer to one of my complaining e-mails, however stating that they did not get one single of my e-mails which hardly can be, because they have been sent out properly. I've re-sent infos and all (35!) screenshots. Now waiting for Acronis' answer and new WD-Driver.

Martin, thank you for the update on this issue, sorry to hear that you are not making much progress but hope that the new WD driver will help things, and that Acronis will get on with working on your emails for you.

Hi Steve,

and Happy New Year! ;-)

Since Acronis denied to support my request stating Acronis True Image Home 15 is no longer under «supporting status» (although paid-status still true!) and cannot find solution to problem, decided to go for new software-version (Acronis' policy forces me to do so) based on two aspects: 1) may be problem shall be sorted out with new version and 2) Acronis has to support again (This is very sad and disappointing).

Preparations in process. Thanks again to you! Shall let you know about results asap.

Martin, welcome back and Happy New Year to you.

The main advice I would offer if you have purchased a new version of ATIH would be to make a clean start with this by doing an uninstall of your old 2015 version, running the Acronis Cleanup Tool (link below), restarting then installing the new version.

Do you have any experience on updating/upgrading Acronis True Image Home 2015? If I buy an Upgrade to 2017-Edition, offered by Acronis, can I install Upgrade-Version even, if installed 2015-Version (on which the Upgrade is based on) has been uninstalled before (as you recommend to do so)? Or did I get you wrong?

Martin, yes, I have upgraded numerous times from various versions, including from 2015 to 2016 and to 2017, but I would still recommend going for a clean install in order to have the best start to using the new version and not having any left-overs from the old version to cause any odd issues.

If you have a number of backup tasks configured for the 2015 version, then you can save a copy of the script files (.TIS) from C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts folder and copy these back after doing the clean install.  You will still need to reconfigure any schedule for these tasks but all the main configuration details will be kept via the .TIS files.

With upgrades, one point to keep in mind is that you will be asked for two different serial / license numbers, one for the new version and one for the old version (in that order).

I agree with Steve. Acronis works at a low level in Windows, so it involves many system files and Registry entries. So, as with anti-virus applications, I always prefer to entirely clean out the existing installation before installing a new version of ATI. It may not always be necessary, but it's prudent.

Steve, tuttle, thanks a lot for supporting me! (which is supposed to be Acronis' job, I think)

Anyway. As recommended, I uninstalled Acronis True Image Home 2015 via «Systemsteuerung\Alle Systemsteuerungselemente\Programme und Features» according to (I writing down all of this in order to may be helpful to others, following this task) the Manual (ATI2015_userguide_de-DE.pdf, Page 10).

Thereafter - as suggested - I run «Cleanup-Tool» (for True Image! There are other Cleanup-Tools as well!). If of any interest, please read about my experiences:

- De-Installation not even mentioned under separate Title. Described or to be found under 1.4 Installing ATIH.
- In current avialable (German) Manual, De-Installation under Windows 10 not mentioned
- On «Uninstall Survey - German: English Text only
- According to Steves (Thanks!) Link to Cleanup Utility it's «48668: Acronis True Image: Cleanup Utility». Although «German» (and other Languages) are offered, you are not taken to the corresponding page, but to a Main-Page.
- Attention: Do not try to search «Cleanup» on German Pages of Knowledge Base! You shall be shown Cleanup Utility for «Acronis Backup» (different Number too). Not sure wether same or not. Follow Steves Link only!
- On German KB-Page https://kb.acronis.com/de/search/site/Cleanup?f[0]=product%3A5462 most of Text (like on most of other pages) in English
- Attention: During «Administrator: Acronis Clean Up Utility 2.0» (Title of DOS-Task) and after Question about «explorer.exe» additional Question not mentioned/explained in Description (on KB 48668): «Do you want to remove extended capacity disks? [y/n]». My Decision was to answer with «n». Please let me know in case of need to take further action!
- On editing Registry, I encountered Values/Paramters (e.g. in «LowerFilters» not mentioned either (e.g. «EhStorClass») and not indicated wether something to do or not
- On second Key to be edited: Found Entries/Values not explained/mentioned either (e.g. in «LowerFilters: fvevol rdyboost iorate» or in «UpperFilters: volsnap» (Since not mentionned, no action taken). Not even that there may be other values.

1. Why to uninstall Software, if Cleanup-Utility does it as well?

2. Why Software not able to uninstall completely, so additonal Cleanup-Utility is necessary??

3. Why does Cleanup-Utility «damage their installation» if you have other Acronis products installed???

4. How to remove left-behinds if you have «other Acronis products installed» and Software-Uninstallation does not uninstall everything?

5. If Acronis offers sale of Product (Upgrade) AND I have an Acronis Account under my E-Mailaddress, why I have to register at an other company not known to me, but Acronis is dealing with and this company states first, that my password is wrong (which is not true) and if asking for password, telling me, my e-mail is unknown? (Either send offer by this company or pass on my Login to that company! Make clear Appearance!)

PS: Screenshots of all Points listed available.

I shall come back and update after Installation of new ATIH 2017. In case of any questions, please feel free to ask.

Martin, a lot of software vendors have similar cleanup tools available for instances when the standard uninstall process does not work fully or leaves 'stuff' behind, and this is especially true with applications that work at a very low level within the Windows OS.

I have used cleanup tools from Norton (Symantec), AVG, McAfee among others.

The Acronis Cleanup tool will remove any other installed Acronis products such as Disk Director.  Extended Capacity Disks were provided with earlier versions of the product for users who bought disk drives larger than was able to be supported by Windows at that time, but not needed with any of the recent versions of Windows with support for GPT partitions.

Steve, thanks, but ... I know what a «Cleanup-Tool» is. But this still does not answer my question no «2»! And not «3». And not «4». Acronis is supposed to make *proper* Software, un-installing it itself without Tools that do the job. I Think. At least, that's the way I do it. And if Tool is necessary, make one for each Product or Product-Group, not harming other Software! No?

Martin, only Acronis would be able to give definitive answers to your questions and explain why their cleanup tool is needed.  I suspect that part of the answer lays with the need to try to preserve user data and task settings - this again primarily for when installing new versions/builds as upgrades where existing tasks are carried forward to the new version.

Final Conclusion:

Because no chance to find out, what the problem(s) is, after such a long time, it did not make sense, to spend more time on that. Therefore I decided to go for Upgrade from ATHI 2015 to Version 2017. After having installed new Version (according to Entry #9, Fri, 2017-01-20 18:36), I set up new Backup-Definitions, one for each Drive. No messages, nor errors occured so far! Resumée: Acronis Support was disappointing and much to late. Only «Help» I was given: Buy Upgrade!

Anyway: I'm fine so far. Backups run again. Ticket can be closed. Thanks again especially to Steve for all of his great and patient monitoring support!

Martin, thanks for giving your feedback and am glad that you seem to be getting on well with the 2017 upgrade / version.

Jinguarasef Jingu... I didn't see that one in the Acronis user manual - different product altogether and suspsect you should contact the developer of that product.

Ultimately, if the software let's you take backups of your own owned and licensed DVD's, you are entitled to make backups of your own DVD's, but that really depends on the specific license agreement of the media you are using and/or the laws of the specific state you will be in.

Generally speaking, ripping DVD's that you have not purchased (those rented, borrowed, downloaded without license rights from teh web), are illegal to make copies of and own or distribute.  Owning such a product (hardware or software) is not illegal just in itself - how you use it will determine it's legality.

Either way, not an Acronis issue, so can't really give you any other advice than that.
