Acronis 2014 Prem. - Windows 8.1 compatibility issues? or bug?
Hello there,
For a while now i've been trialing/testing your software.
I've been using Acronis for a long time but right now, i'm struggling to get it to work correctly on Windows 8.1.
I'm using Acronis True Image Home 2014 Premium.
The problem i keep running into, is that my schedule settings do not seem to get saved or handled in the correct way. This also goes for other settings i change inside the application.
This leads to my backup schedule doing the craziest things which will simply not change such as:
- Keeps creating backups with a filename a did not specify
- Keeps creating backups with the 'factory default' settings rather then the one i specify (such as validating the backup right after creating it).
I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the application a few times and i registered to your website so i could download the very latest version of your trial. Sadly, the latest version is still giving me the same issues.
So, put simply... before i spend money and even consider to buy your software i definitely want it to correctly so i can be sure of a safe back-up method.
Ideally, my backup schedule (which has worked fine for years on Acronis 2010 and 2011) should look like this:
1. Monday 17:00h
- Create a file backup of a text file called: "MOVE OPERATION SUCCESSFUL"
- Destination: E:\True Image\My Computer (OLD)\MOVE OPERATION SUCCESSFUL.tib
- Advanced options: Run "E:\True Image\Scripts\Before Backup Win8.bat" before execution.
(This script does nothing more then 'Move "E:\True Image\My Computer\*.*" "E:\True Image\My Computer (OLD)\" ' ).
2. Monday, Wednesday and Friday 17:03h
- Create a single incremental backup of the partitions called: "System reserved space" + "Windows (C:)"
- Destination: E:\True Image\My Computer\Windows.tib
- Validate backup after completion
3. Monday, Wednesday and Friday 17:05h
- Create a single incremental backup of the partitions called: "Games (D:)"
- Destination: E:\True Image\My Computer\Games.tib
- Validate backup after completion
Another weird thing that seems to happen in Acronis 2014 is that, when the script does indeed execute...the *.tib image files are moved to the "OLD" directory, yet the new incremental images will suddenly be created in this directory as well (adding to the backup...which i obviously do not want).
The script makes sure, that the files are stored safely and won't be overwritten until the new backup is created.
Thanks in advance for any help.

When i say filenames i do not mean the suffixes. I mean the default filename which TI applies when i first create the task is always kept, no matter what i do.
Ie. i create a new task and the image is named "My Backup". I then rename it to "Windows" before saving the new task. When the task runs, the image is still called "My Backup".
This is only an example of what happens, like i said this goes for all task/schedule/application settings, they are simply not saved.
The text file is totally irrelevant. I need a file to create a task and that's all that its there for (just so i have a task that can run my script first).
Also the .bat script has been tested and runs perfectly fine (as stated, all it does is run a simple Move command). Changing it to a .cmd script would only change the extension.
I just moved the images manually and as a result the new incremental no longer seems to be added to the same image. Instead a new image file was created, so this 'seems' to be fixed (after a quick test im not sure if this will keep working).
So the real problem really is the fact that settings do not seem to get saved at all.
Also, i get prompted by UAC to allow Acronis to perform an action, everytime i try to start it. Is this normal?
This would imply its trying to write to a location, which according to Microsoft developer specifications should not be necessary to write to for an application (at least thats what i've heard).

You just changed the name of the task, not the name of the archive file stored on the disk. Don't ask me why the 2 can be different, they can. To change the name of the file, you have to enter it when you specify the destination.
When doing so, choose browse, double click your way until you have opened your target folder, then enter the archive file name in the box.
Don't move your files manually. ATI is trying to keep track of what backup has been done and where it was stored, but it cannot sync back to the disk. All archive file operations, (move, rename, delete,..) should be done within the ATI software or there will be a high risk that your restores won't work.
Finally, although ATI supports the editing of a task, it is better to create a new task in a new directory. New users tend to fiddle a lot with settings until they have their ideal backup settings. That's OK. My advice is to keep it simple.

@ Pat L, i've followed your suggestion but i renamed both already (so the task as well as the image name).
I tried it yet again, but it made no difference unfortunately.
Also, all 3 of my backup tasks ran today... but as before... the script wasn't executed, so the files didn't move.
Now, i manually moved the files... after that i manually restarted the 2 backup tasks.
The weird thing is.. even though both of the backups are in a different folder now... one of them is not 'detected' whilst the other one is.
Meaning, for one of the tasks there was a full backup created (as intended) and for the other one there was an incremental created whilst there was no other backup in that same folder (for this image/task).
So yet again, the same conclusion.... none of the settings seem to be honored succesfully.
Are you sure no one has reported these kind of issues before?
I'm using a legit W 8.1 Pro license and its a clean install...yet i keep having these issues.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, so i can finally carry on without having to intervene manually in my backup proces 3 times a week... :)

Just noted this sentence. ATI will not delete any previous version or chain before having successfully completed a new full backup. I am not sure what you are trying to achieve with the scripts.
ATI will automatically add some extensions to your chose name (ie Windows) to keep track of full and incremental backups separately, so an incremental "windows.tib" cannot overwrite the full "windows.tib", because these names will not be like that, but like "windows_full_b1_s1_v1.tib" where b is the backup chain number, s1 is the index of the backup in the chain, and v1 is the part of the backup file if your backup file is split. The incremental file will have a corresponding name like "windows_inc_b1_s2_v1.tib"

Pat: That is only the slightest of all my issues..... but: if so can i also tell ATI to delete the old chain once a new full image is created?

My windows 8.1 install seems faulty and I want to do a clean windows install and then restore the rest of the data and applications. Any suggestions on how I should backup so that I can do this without losing applications or data. I currently have everything in one partition, C:. Never tried this before.
