Acronis and WD My Cloud Back up problems
I've been creating backups to WD Mycloud which is connected to my home network. The problem is that when I create an initial backup, it works fine. However when the next time I create an incremental or differential backup, the previous backup version doesn't seem to be found. This problem is random. At this point I can create a new back up which works fine. Also I can access the WD MY Cloud through Mycomputer>networks and see it there, the previous version is visible as well.

Could I keep the power settings and use ftp instead?

It sounds like you are doing unscheduled backups which is fine. Changing to an FTP connection will not change the fact that if your backup device is in a sleep state that it would be awakened when you are creating or desire to perform a backup. There are also limitations to using an FTP connection, see here:

You should first test to see if in fact disabling power saving features fixes your issue. This can be done by of course disabling power saving settings on the device. You could also access the device via Windows explorer effectively waking the backup device for example just prior to execution of the backup task and ensure that your previous backup is shown and the task can run and complete successfully.
It seems counter intuitive to disable power saving settings on a storage device. The reality is that power usage on a idle drive is quite minimal and HDD spindown and spinup cycles are know to shorten the life span of HDD's. Also spindown/spinup uses more energy than if the drive is already spinning when it is accessed.
Compromises are often difficult choices, the decision on which avenue to take is ultimately yours.
