Acronis blocks Win 7 Shutdowns.
I always back up my system with Acronis (currently True Image Home 2011) prior to installing Microsoft's monthly updates. Typically a re-start is required. I always try to ensure that all running processes are shut down prior to re-start.
In recent months, these re-starts have been delayed by up to over one hour, during the Shut-down process, with the following message:
"Operations are in progress. Please wait."
Well, it didn't take me long to figure out that the "operations in progress" were Acronis operations.
What I need to know is exactly what to do to avoid this in future.

Hi Gaslad
Do you have your backup set to validate once its finished?

I think I do. If this is the cause, how do I configure it not to validate?

Hi
you need to edit the task with TI, open up ti then click on the task in question , click on operations then edit back up settings, then click on disk backup options (at the very bottom of the window) then click on validation and take the tick out of the box.then click ok and run the task to see if that helps.
It did with me, i only had this problem when i was making a full partition backup, all my other backups worked fine.
What i do now is once the backup is complete i then carry out a manual validation to make sure the back up is ok, its a bit of a pain but at least now i can run the back up and get my pc to shut down as soon as the backup is complete and this it does without any hanging or other messages being displayed.
Pete
P.S sometimes acronis doesn't like it when you start editing existing tasks and it can cause the task to fail, my advice would be to delete the original task and then recreate it remembering to leave the tick out of the validation box.

Hi Pete:
Try as I might, I cannot stop this shutdown aggravation. Thanks for your suggestions, but ATI is just a pain.
Windows 7 has its own backup, far simpler to use, and I am deleting True Image.
No backup should throw up these roadblocks!

I'm having the exact same problem on windows 7. Additionally, the backup no longer works. It hangs everytime. This is after performing an upgrade yesterday (7 dec 2011).
The one time I needed to do a restore with acronis a couple years ago, it wouldn't work either. Is there another reliable backup software package that works reliably and doesn't have such horrible and showstopper bugs? How about the latest version of Ghost? Is it just as bad as acronis?

Also, another important thing...Will uninstalling this dog cause my system to no longer boot? This happened to me once before.

I, too, suffer from this problem, albeit intermittently. I have unchecked validation and that stops the problem for a while, but then, for no apparent reason (no updates in Windows or anything else), it reappears. Acronis hasn't addressed this problem for years and I'm about to give up on ATI and go elsewhere. I have heard good things about Easeus 3.5. Not sure Ghost is any better than Acronis. Anybody?

I'm going to give EaseUS a try. It can't be any worse than Acronis which has failed me both in restoring a system as well as in causing crashes during system boot and system shutdown when I'm not even using their backup/restore software!
The problem with acronis is that they are continually generating new requirements that most users don't need. They seen to feel as if they have to do this in order to keep enticing you into upgrading. Instead of adding new/unwanted features, they should concentrate on fixing their bugs.
I don't want a spyware-style file listener constantly running and monitoring whether files have changed.
I don't want to be able to create a virtual machine to try out software that I have downloaded.
I don't want to mount my backup as a virtual machine.
I just want a reliable backup and restore program that runs when *I* invoke it and which restores when *I* invoke it.
#FAIL for acronis in both regards. Plus, their support sucks.

This morning I shut down my machine. Acronis displays: "Operations are in progress. Please wait."
10 hours later, I come home and the message is still showing. My machine never shutdown.
Can you say crapware?

Well, I uninstalled ATI Home 11 via Control Panel/Uninstall a program.
I also ran true_image_home_cleanup.exe for good measure.
Now I find I cannot run Windows 7 Backup utility in Control Panel.
Now isn't that just great? Thanks to Acronis, I now have no way to back up my system. I'm seriously ticked off here!

Gaslad,
There is a utility to return the Microsoft Backup and restore settings. I assume you had an early build of 2011 as this buglet was resolved in the last build.
I don't have the link at the moment as I'm at work. It can also be restored via registry editing. Depending on which build you have, anothe ralternative would be to re-install 2011 and untick the integrate option, however, this won't work with the first two builds.

Thanks Colin.
I don't know which build of 2011 I had, but I'm finished with Acronis. It was once an intuitive program to use, but lately just a massive headache. Any help you can give me to resolve this is much appreciated.

Gaslad,
The download for the integration disabler is here

Thanks, Colin.
I ran that, and at least I can now access my Win 7 backup program.
Unfortunately I still cannot get Win 7 to backup or image my system. When I try, I get the following message:
"The backup failed.
BitLocker Drive Encryption cannot be used because critical BitLocker system files are missing or corrupted. Use Windows Startup Repair to restore these files to your computer. (0x8031004A)"
I have no clue how to use "Startup Repair".
It seems Acronis has effectively destroyed my ability to back up my system.

Gaslad,
As far as I knew, Acronis only removed/replaced the link in registry to the Microsoft Backup program. Did you have Bitlocker enabled when you installed TIH?
I take it you wish to use Bitlocker?
You can either use your Widnows 7 install DVD or if the option still works, create a system repair disk which will be the second option available on the Backup and Restore panel under Control Panel.
Run the DVD or CD and select repair, you may need to run this a number of times, as one big annoyance with Vista and W7 repair methods is that the recovery software only repairs one problem at a time.

1) I have no desire to use BitLocker Encryption. I never installed it, and I can't find any evidence it was on this computer. (It might have come from Dell's pre-installed software, but it certainly is gone now).
2) I do have a Dell Win 7 Home Premium/ sp1 64 bit OS re-install DVD that came with this 6 month old PC (version 6.1, build 7601).
3) I have been unable to create a system repair disk.
4) My PC is working well - I just can't back it up or image it anymore.
5) When I attempt to run the OS DVD, I get only the options to choose a language, then install the OS.
I'm reluctant to proceed further, as I don't wan't to re-install my OS, and lose my data! I only want to repair the Win 7 backup utility. And I can't backup my data first without a working backup utility. Catch 22!
I suppose I can send every file and folder to an external HD, then re-install the Dell OS, then remove all the pre-installed junkware from Dell, then somehow restore all the data.
Please spare me this nightmare! In over a dozen years, I have never had to re-install an OS from scratch.
