Acronis Home 2010 crashes my Windows 7 PC

Thread needs solution

I've used Acronis at work for a few years and found it to be excellent. I recently bought a new PC and thought I'd try out Acronis True Image 2010 Home edition.

After I installed it I found that the PC would crash (lock up) a few seconds after restarting. I could not log in. If I did manage to login the it would crash (lock up) within a few seconds.

I just spent a fun morning of restarting in and out of safe mode and using msconfig. I've got to the point where if I reboot with "Acronis Scheduler2 Service" DISABLED but all other services and start-up programs ENABLED then everything is fine. But if I go the one step further and enable Schedule2 then I get the crash (lock up). So the problem is definately the Schedule2 service.

Help please or I'll have to find another backup tool (which will be a shame because my Acronis experience to date has been awesome).

My system is setup as follows:
Windows 7 Professional 64bit (all up to date)
4Gig Ram
Three 1 T byte hard drives (first 2 setup as RAID, 3rd for backup)

It's funny (not really), that I had the exact same problem as you, today as well.

My PC is similar to yours (Win 7, 64 bit, two SDDs in RAID 0, and two 500GB HDD in RAID 1 for backups). I should also point out that I had not used my computer in about a week's time, so when I was booting it up for the first time, it was long past due for the weekly backup task to run. I got my computer working again as follows:

1. Booted into Safe Mode

2. Start Menu >> Admin Tools >> System Configuration >> Services Tab >> Turned OFF "Acronis Scheduler2 Service"

3. Rebooted (successfully) in Normal mode

4. I noticed that the backup RAID1 Hard Drives were being reported as "Initializing" by the Intel RAID Controller service. This means that (for some reason) it is rebuilding the drives, so I let it continue the rebuild which took 4 hours. In the mean time, I checked the Acronis scheduled tasks logs, and I can see that everytime I was trying to boot (and failing), the acronis scheduler was trying to run the scheduled backup task. So, I am guessing that the re-initializing process of the RAID backup drives was interfering with the scheduled backup task.

5. Once the Backup HDDs were rebuilt, I went into Start Menu >> Admin Tools >> Services >> and manually started the "Acronis Scheduler2 Service". After about 20 seconds, I received a popup message that the "Acronis Scheduled Task" (or something like that) had completed successfully.

6. I went back into Start Menu >> Admin Tools >> System Configuration >> Services Tab >> Turned ON "Acronis Scheduler2 Service"

7. Rebooted (successfully) in Normal mode, with the Acronis Scheduler2 Service now working properly, and the computer working as it was before.

To conclude, I did not need the updated SnapApi module suggested by Bogdy above. I am guessing that the RAID 1 rebuild which was fully occupying the Read/Write access to the Backup HDDs was preventing the schedule backup from running properly.

Brilliant! If that turns out to be the problem, you could set the Scheduler2 service to delayed start under the Startup Type drop down box.

Excellent suggestion! This will probably prevent me some pain for the next time. It took me a little while to find the setting for delayed start. It's under Admin Tools >> Services.
