Acronis TI 2011 Home does not delete old file and starts a new one

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I am constantly running into the same situation on a Windows XP (SP3) Computer. While trying to backup the whole HDD (C and D) onto an external HDD Acronis TI just does not want to overwrite/delete the old file - see attached screenshot.

What I did: The file "Sicherung_Server.tib" was created by me just using creating a new Txt-File and putting an tib on the end. Interesting is what Acronis does: It just wont overwrite/delete the file and instead the tool creates a new one named "Sicherung_Server2.tib". The size here is zero, because the creation process just started.

I am using the newest version of Acronis 2011 and slowly our customer is starting to be fed up by all the *circumstances*. This problem even occured with the 2010 version of Acronis was installed so the customer changed (and payed) for the newer 2011 - sad situation.

Hopefully I will find help here...

Kind regards and already Thank you!

Daniel

The procedure used by TrueImage Home is
During the start of the backup, a new file (temporary) will be created and remain created until the new backup file is completed and verified as a valid file.

Now that the replacement has been created, the original file will be deleted.

The program will NOT delete the file until after the creation of its replacement.

Hello and Thank you GroverH,

this seems to make sense! But why does the old file remain on the harddrive even if i do NOT create one manually by using a text-editor?

By looking at this protocol, I am guessing that the error on the end could be responsible for not deleting the old file - what do you say? :-)

kcn,

Can you post a screen capture of your backup scheme settings or describe it?

Hello and sorry for the delay! I was not able to get connected to the customer yet. I think this will happen within the next week.

Until then, I try to describe the settings I am using:

- Backup scheme: One version that is always overwritten
- NO sector-by-sector imaging
- Backup is validated after the process
- Computer will be shut down after imaging

Any other settings you would like to know? :-)

The image is created either on one of two external harddrives.

Regards
Daniel

Some users have reported issues with the Single version scheme and or a Full backup with one most recent backup to keep. One way to work around this is to create an incremental backup chain with one incremental before a new full, keep only one most recent backup chain.

Don't forget to create a new task, instead of editing a current task (ie changing backup scheme, retention rules, backup name or destination).

Hello Pat L,

I have just configured a brand new tast in Acronis. Test will be running on thursday. After that I will report here again :-)

Thanks!
Daniel

Hello,

unfortunately the new tast with different settings did not work either.

Here is what the logfile says (interesting are the last lines):

Any idea?

It looks like something interrupted the validation. Most likely the destination of the backup became unavailable, ATI requested help from the user and ATI timed out by default, then considered the time out a user cancellation.

Interesting! Where do you see that? Do you suggest to switch the validation off?

Hello,

solved the problem: For this customer I used the software Paragon Backup & Recovery Free Edition.

Seriously: Thanks to all who really helped me here! :-)

No Thanks to Acronis - here is the next unsatisfied customer (and distributor!). For our business customers and their servers we moved to Storagecraft and within the next couple weeks all servers are going to be supplied with their software.

Daniel

THis means "Cancelled by user" and this message can appear when ATI cannot access the file, directory or disk where the backup is. It then pops up a message that the user has to react to. If the user doesn't, the dialog times out and the cancel option is selected by default. That ATI says it has been cancelled by the user is misleading...
