Acronis True Image 11 Home is suddenly confused.

Thread needs solution

Scenario:

Toshiba Tecra M2
Windows XP Pro
One internal and one external hard drive.

I have the hard drives partitioned into two virtual drives, the internal drive is C and D, the external Drive is E and F.

For years now I have been making image backups of Drive C on the first partition of my external drive (currently E).

All of a sudden, Acronis is confused. It thinks my E partition is a CD R/W drive and asks me to insert media.

I have tried changing the drive letters (the backup drive was I and J, but I changed it to E and F) but that doesn't solve the problem.

This is a new problem.

My backup procedure is to insert the disk into the CD drive and boot from the disk. I create a backup image of my C partition (the boot partition) on drive E.

But now, not only is Acronis confused, so am I.

I need this fixed, I absolutely depend on those backups.

Thanks for your help.

I'm traveling in Brazil at the moment and don't know how to get ahold of tech support, so I appreciate whatever you can do for me.

Note: Here is a followup. After I posted this post, I tried to do the backup by running the program in Windows. (I've never done that before). When I tried that, I got the following error:

E0006-40068 Failed to create the scheduled disk. Error #1722 - "The RPC server is unavailable (0xFFF0)."

Please note: RPC is set to automatic and it is started.

But the darned program should work from the disk without windows running. Just for a test, I tried it on another computer and it works.

Thanks,
Bruce Patterson

its a pure guess but maybe its the bios that is confused. try rebooting and hitting whatever key for your hardware takes you into the bios setup (usually one of del,f1,f2,f10,f11,f12)
check the settings sounds like bios is set to not auto detect the device/hd but to expect a cd device.

oracledba,

Well, that was certainly a reasonable guess, but no cigar. The second hard drive is connected by USB port. The CD drive is in the select bay, and the computer is looking for a hard drive there, but there is no possibility to change that. I believe that Acronis TI loads drivers for the USB ports and everything. When the list of hard drives are listed when acronis opens, those two partitions show up as hard drives, it is when I try to place a backup on one of those partitions, that it suddenly thinks it is a CD drive and asks me to insert media. The CD drive actually opens, but the CD drive is assigned letter I. I am selecting E.

ATI boot cd always twists my drive letters around. Could it be that you've got a flash card in or other usb device that is confusing ATI. You should still be able to find the right drive. Try to browse for backups using the boot cd. It could be the database of backup locations has gone bad. You could also try to start a restore -- look around your drives for the one that has your backups, cancel out of the restore after noting thew new drive letter.

No flash cards or any other removable media are involved. I was able to create a backup to the second partition of the external drive (F). It took four hours! I haven't verified it yet. I'm copying it to the E drive where it should be.

I have no problem finding the drives at all. They all appear in the list of available drives and all with the proper drive letter. It's when I try to backup to the E drive then it opens my DVD/CD drive and asks me to insert media.

Another problem is that I can't use the installed version of Acronis which is on my computer. It says that RPC server isn't available, but it is, it's confused again!

I'm going to uninstall it and reinstall to see if that makes any difference.

Everything used to work, I don't know what changed.

"four hours" may or may not be "crazy" there simply isn't enough information here.

For example, on my pc, with "normal" compression my ".tib" file on a full backup is 183 gig.
Its normal for this pc to require 4 hours to complete its backup.
An INCR takes just a few minutes but usually is just gig or so in size.

However my sister's pc the .tib for FULL backup is just 22 gig (about 1/8 the size of mine).
It is normal for her backup finish in just a few minutes (20 or less).

So Even accounting for the size difference I am slower than her
but I would hardly complain that its crazy that it takes four hours to make the backup.
It seems to me there is a lot of data invoved for my backup so a few hours may not be out of relm of expectations.

Of course if readers dis-agree and you see a problem here please speak up as I'm all for figuring out issues to make things even faster.

Well, I really have no complaints about the 4 hour backup as long as I can actualy make a backup!

For the RPC problem, I uninstalled and reinstalled the program, and that fixed it.

For the other problem, I came up with a workaround. I was able to make a backup on the "F" partition--The backup USB drive is E and F. Then I copied the backup from F to E. I'm gonna see if I can restore from that backup on E. I won't actually do the restoration, I'll just go right up to the proceed point to see if it works. I verified the backup data before copying it and it verified good.

Why can't I get any help from Acronis Tech support?

Hello all,

Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.

No worries, I will help you to resolve this situation.

frantid and oracledba, thank you for the good suggestions!

Bruce, please check the information below:

1. RPC issue (I'm glad that you were fixed it, but let me explain what happened):

It's not related to RPC service itself, this issue occurs when some scheduler services are stopper. This can be fixed easily by starting them, here are the instructions:

  • Click Start -> Run and type in services.msc;
  • In the Services window locate Acronis Scheduler2 Service;
  • Right-click on the service and select Properties in the pop-up menu;
  • In the invoked window set the Startup type to Automatic. Click OK;
  • Right-click on the service again and select Start in the pop-up menu.

We have the special article with the description on how to fix it.

2. Issue with incorrect letters recognition:

The full version of Acronis Bootable Rescue Media uses Linux environment, the naming convention of which is different from Windows.

Try identifying the drive or partition you need by size or label.

(!) If you have a USB drive, it is recommended to plug it in after booting from Acronis Bootable Media, so that it does not receive the drive letter of your system partition.

As far as I understand, the issue you're facing is more important, since the drive you want to save the image on is recognized as CD drive. In this case, it might be useful to download the version which is based on another loader (the version has some extended list of drivers and startup parameters).

I have sent you the link to download the ISO file via PM.

You can find more information on how to burn an ISO image to a CD here.

Please let us know if this ISO helps you to operate with the product normally. Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Best regards,
