Acronis True Image 2015 won't install
Failed install of True Image 2015 onto Dell PC running XP OS with Acronis 2009 Home. Install failure msg: "True Image 2015 Installation restricted ... & please uninstall Acronis 'Home' (2009) and try again" - Uninstall of 2009 & attempt to install 2015 version not successful.
Acronis TI 2015 worked fine with Dell PC running Win10 but this PC's motherboard failure (2nd time) sent me looking for Acronis backup files on external hard drive using True Image Home 2009 app on older Dell PC running XP. Acronis 2009 WILL access backup files made with 2009 Version but cannot access backup files made with Acronis 2015 on WIN10 OS . I assume I have to install 2015 Version onto XP machine to access backup files created using 2015 Version?

I appreciate the advice. One thing that gave me pause was that the Acronic Cleanup Utility indicates that the oldest True Image version it will uninstall is 2010 Home and I have 2009. Am unsure therefore if the Clean Up utility will then clean up remaining Acronis files, folders and registry entries for 2009 True Image Home.

Leigh, I would still suggest trying the Acronis Cleanup tool even though it doesn't include ATI 2009 in the list shown - there should be very little difference between ATI 2009 and 2010.
The alternative here would be to use a more general uninstaller program such as IOBit Uninstaller and let this try to chase down all related files, folders and registry entries.
One other thought, if you still have the 2009 installation program you could run this and take the option to Uninstall when given. Note: you can download the install program from your Acronis account if it was registered to the same.

Steve,
Thanks again. My first choice was/is to use IOBit Unistall, which is what I did originally to uninstall True Image Home 2009 and this choice nevertheless resulted in a failure to install 2015 which I also own and have ability to download from Acronis.
As the steps to use the Acronis Cleanup tool are a bit daunting, I'll first try your suggestion to re-install 2009 from the exe file I can download for it from Arcronis and then choose unistall.
Last step to try will be the Acronis cleanup, as I also hoped that 2010 would be similar enough to work to clean up residual files on the slightly earlier version. With software one often doesn't quite know but it's my last, best shot.

I no longer had the install disk for True Image Home V.12.0.98 (2009 vintage) but did have the 'option' to download from Acronis - unfortunately the only download site given to me is in the Netherlands and instructions to install are in Dutch and I was not able to install it. I fumbled something or other in the set up steps - it got complex and my Dutch is non-existant.
Seems my only option is to try to wend my way thru the Acronis True Image Cleanup Utility steps which seems a bit daunting but that looks like my last possibility to get the 2015 version installed so I can access backup files created with the later version. I still have the install disk for that but downloaded exe file (with English instructions!) from Acronis as most up to date. Not that it will install yet - get to the very end & get fatal error message.

Leigh, one late thought. Have you tried creating another user account and installing ATI 2015 from that? It should be an Administrator level user, but sometimes these issues are tied to one user only.

Thanks but doesn't work. Seemed like something worth trying but ATI 2015 won't install in a different User account on XP. the program is still going out to the C drive and finding something residual that it doesn't like. So, last step and hopefully final one is to use the Acronis cleanup program.

Steve,
Re your comment: "One other thought, if you still have the 2009 installation program you could run this and take the option to Uninstall when given. Note: you can download the install program from your Acronis account if it was registered to the same."
So, the steps to Uninstall (2009 install program) will typically and automatically be offered after the installation of this software, correct?
As the last chance of downloading the ATI 2009 software for me has Dutch install instructions, I'm contacting a Dutch friend to walk me through the process. My last ditch effort to get ATI 2015 version installed as nothing else has worked to this point. Perhaps some residual files remain from 2009 V after using the 2010 cleanup tool - am assuming this tool version may have some key difference from what is needed for complete removal of ATI 2009 software.

Leigh, I have sent you a private message which you can read via the My Account link at the top of the forum pages.

Leigh, further to the private messages we've exchanged, please see the following KB documents that may help us to try to work out why you cannot install either ATI 2009 or 2015.
KB 1639: Creating an MS Installer Log of Acronis Software - this doesn't go back as far as 2009 but does cover 2010 and 2015.
KB 46710: Acronis True Image: Installation Fails in Windows - this only goes back as far as 2015 but may help with that product install issue.
KB 1647: Analyzing Installation Logs of Acronis Products Based on MSI Technology - this has some basic help for looking for errors.
It may also be worth trying a tool such as CCleaner to clean your Windows Registry and review any entries that look to be related to any Acronis software - CCleaner offers an option to save any registry entries before removing them to allow them to be recovered if needed.
One final thought here: see webpage: Non-destructive reinstall of Windows XP - which can help with cleaning up the OS when you hit problems like this.

Thanks again Steve,
However, I'm not spending a minute more on trying to make do with Acronis on XP, which is now an unsupported OS, as is the no longer supported ATI 2009 software. When I get my newer Dell repaired with Win10 OS, I will again be able to use my more current Acronis (2015) for back up.
You gave a good effort to try to help me out and I appreciate it,
Leigh
