Acronis True Image Home 10 -- extremely slow

Thread needs solution

I have been a happy user of Acronis True Image Home 10 (ATI 10) build 4871 for years now as my backup software. I make an image of my entire HDD at the start of each month then incremental for the rest of the month. Works beautifully.

As I moved laptops I have moved ATI with me. On the latest laptop however, ATI is now too slow to be usable - a full backup now takes 9+ hours.

All the laptops are running XP SP3. On the previous laptop (a thinkpad T60p Core2Duo 2.33GHz 3Gb RAM) backing up the entire 320Gb HDD takes about 45 minutes. I backup either to an external eSATA drive or a second HDD inside the drive bay. ATI set to normal priority.

On the current laptop (a thinkpad X60t CoreDuo 1.86GHz 3GB RAM) backing up the same 320Gb HDD, same volume of data, takes 9+++ hours. ATI estimates the time to be 9 hours, but when I left it to run after 8 hours it is still only 51% done. Both drive lights are on constantly. No difference where ATI priority is set to low, normal or high. Backup is to a second HDD installed in the dock.

The current machine has a slower processor, but surely it cannot make that much difference!

When I first set up the current laptop, Acronis backed up the drive very quickly (OS and all applications) 25Gb worth. The data partition is 70Gb. Again this does not explain the silly increase in time. But something has changed.

I have tried ATI build 4942 - same issue.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have relied on ATI for so long now I don't really want to change to another program.

Thanks!!

Is the problem when using TI in Windows or are you doing the backups when booted to the TI CD?

TI within Windows. That's how I have always used TI.

I have updated all my drivers, Windows, and reinstalled ATI build 4942 - still no improvement. Estimated time to backup about 95Gb is still 9 hours.

Thanks!

I'm experiencing similar backup times. It took 4 1/2 hours to back up and verify 137GB over USB 2.0. Is that normal?

@Andrew Cohen

I think what you are experiencing is normal for that amount of data and YSB.

Verification takes more time (files had to be read back and checked) which is the main reason I never use it. File transfer through USB is also very slow and will add to the time.

You may want to consider switching to eSATA instead. You can buy cheap HDD enclosures that takes SATA drives, and cheap PCMCIA/PC Card or ExpressCard eSATA adaptors (if you are on a laptop).

More bad news.
Tried running ATI again and now getting the #1722 The RPC server is unavailable 0xFFF0 error.
Tried to repair. No luck.
Tried to remove. Fatal error during uninstall.
Had to download the Acronis Cleanup Tool to completely uninstall it.

Confidence level with the product is now at an all time low.
ATI 2010 looks problematic too from this forum.

Exploring alternative products now - can't afford to be without backups.
Sigh...

Hello Zern,

Let me help you with the issue.

Most probably, the error message "The RPC server is unavailable" is caused by the fact that Acronis Scheduler service and/or processes are not running properly.

  • Make sure that Acronis Scheduler2 Service is Started and the Startup type is set to Automatic:
    • Click Start -> Run and type in services.msc;
    • In the Services window locate Acronis Scheduler2 Service;
    • Right-click on the service and select Properties in the pop-up menu;
    • In the invoked window set the Startup type to Automatic. Click OK;
    • Right-click on the service again and select Start in the pop-up menu.
  • If this does not help, please download Acronis Scheduler, which is a special utility to update the scheduler service, extract it and run install.bat. The utility will automatically update the service.

Please reply to this thread if the issue still persists.

Thank you.

Thanks for your kind attention Ilya.
The RPC problem was solved after I reinstalled ATI twice. Somehow the scheduler was corrupted in the previous install/uninstall attempts.

Good news!
Original problem solved.
ATI vindicated.
It was a HARDWARE fault.

The HDD caddy was defective.
When I swapped the HDD to another caddy, the estimated backup time was 38 minutes!!!
Yay!
ATI back in the good books again.

Case closed.
