Acronis True Image Home 2009 Error 000101F4 failed to read from sector3,217,640 of the hard disk1

Thread needs solution

I have been using Acronis to backup to an external hard drive for approx 1 year. it is scheduled to do an incremental backup each week, this has been fine until about 5 weeks ago when the error message E000101F4: Failed to read data from sector 3,217,640 of the hard disk 1. started to come up every week. I would be grateful for any ideas that might help resolve this problem.
I have run CHKDSK and this reported no problems

Did this read failure on that particular sector come up only once or has it recurred? If so, it is likely a weak sector, not bad enough for chkdsk to consider it bad but not reliable enough when ATI uses it.

If you can get a validated disk image of the HD, it might be a good idea to do a low level format of the HD and then recover the image using you rescue media

Have you been able to make a validated disk image of the HDD

But is it reporting the very same sector each time? If so, I'd suspect the sector, not the software. It might not show bad for Chkdsk because chkdsk will retry six or seven times and if any of those retires are good, it's happy. I think ATI is fussier. If you have a spare drive that you can temporarily swap, you might try putting the image on that swap drive and see if the problem continues. If not. I'd go for anew drive -- hadrives never get better, they can only get worse over time.

Joe and Scott, many thanks for your help I am sure I will get it sorted somehow, if not I will come back and post a new comment.
