Acronis True Image Home 2009 Vista Blue Screen – Try & Decide Smoking Gun

Thread needs solution

I am between a rock and a hard place on this. I have a D-Link DNS-323 network drive from which I want to periodically back up data to DVD. I am running a Dell 1545 notebook with Vista Home Premium. The BIOS is the latest version and all Vista updates are applied. The Acronis software is upgraded to the last version, 9809. I don’t run anything exotic, and mainly use the computer for Internet and Microsoft Office applications. I use Microsoft Security Essentials for malware protection.

The computer frequently goes to blue screen with automatic reboot at random while in use. It probably does this an average of two times a day while in operation. It will also fail at least 90% of the time when it awakens from either “sleep mode” entered by the power settings, or from “hibernation” my option when powering off the machine. The only thing I have noticed, but it is neither foolproof nor predictable, is that if I wait several minutes after awakening the machine from either mode before doing anything, even as simple as moving the cursor, the odds of it cratering seem to be reduced to maybe 75%. Still a real pain!

The problem is definitely related to Acronis True Image Home 2009, and especially v9809. If I remove it and install any earlier version of ATIH 2009 (the release, v9709, or v 9796) the crashes go away. I have done this several times before submitting this to the Forum to be sure of my facts. Many more times than I have enjoyed!

I have dozens of blue screen dumps and they all contain the following relevant information, obtained by viewing the dump file with NirSoft’s BlueScreenView:

Bug Check String: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL-MODE-TRAP
Bug Check Code: 0x0000007f
Caused by Driver: tdrpm251.sys
Caused by Address: tdrpm251.sys+afefb
File Description: Acronis Try&Decide Volume Filter Driver
Product Name: Acronis Try&Decide
File Version: 1,0,0,251

But falling back to earlier versions does me no good. Earlier versions refuse to back up files from the network drive because of the known “credential” problems, among the fixes in v9809.

I have searched the forum but find no solutions that seem to match this particular blue screen problem (although blue screen seems to be a major problem). I find nothing that gives a work around for the credentials problem related to my network drive for versions prior to 9809. I see that blue screen problems abound even with ATIH 2010.

I would be grateful if anyone can provide help or suggestions to overcome for this problem. Can I disable Try&Decide somehow? Install a different driver? Is there a solution at all?

Hello Alfred,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help.

The issue you are experiencing is well-known, it has been addressed in the latest builds of Acronis True Image Home 2010.

I may recommend you to install a trial version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 available here in order to make sure that the program runs flawlessly.

If the issue remains, please provide us with mini-dump file, you can attach the file your next post.

If the issue is fixed, you may want to purchase the upgrade to Acronis True Image Home 2010. The upgrade licenses can be purchased at Acronis online store

Please let us know the results, we should be sure that the program runs flawlessly. If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other questions do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.

Thank you.

I feel that Acronis' decision to not fix such a serious failure in a one-year-old product, the "latest and greatest" version only a few months ago, and sold to many purchasers right up to the release of 2010, represents a poor level of support. This is even more egregious since the fix is apparently known, and could probably be issued as an update to 2009 with little developer effort and at very little cost to Acronis.

I love the things Acronis True Image Home 2009 does for me, but hate that it crashes my new operating system. I have three licensed copies of ATIH (two of 2009, one of 11). Obviously, I liked the product. I have left favorable reviews in several venues concerning it. But I must say that if resolution of my current problem, and indications of support on many threads on many topics on this Forum are typical, the level of that support is quite weak.

I feel Acronis should either apply the fix to an update for 2009, or make a means for users of Vista and/or Windows 7 to obtain a copy of 2010 at no cost as a replacement. After all, your incremental cost is the time it takes a server to issue the download. That seems a small price to make your customers happy. I know there would be a few "sharp operators" who would take advantage of the company under the latter option, but how much is the loyalty (and recommendation) of current customers worth in the long run?

I have the same issue with Acronis True Image Home 2009 and Windows Vista and the blue screen crash dumps.

Have any updates been made available to True Image Home 2009 to address this issue since the last forum post above?

Thanks!
