Acronis True Image Western Digital Edition Boot CD does not recognise Western Digital Drive
Hello all,
I have the latest version of Acronis True Image Western Digital Edition (tih_s_e_14010.exe) and have created a Boot CD using the Bootable Media Builder option. I have 4 PCs (1 Desktop & 3 Laptops) which I wish to backup onto an external USB laptop sized drive enclosure which has a Western Digital laptop drive installed into it.
When I boot any of the 4 PCs with the Boot CD, the program stops with the following message:
"Detecting devices: Attach a Western Digital hard drive to launch the program, or click Cancel to quit. Also you can upgrade to a full version of the product at http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/tru...."
This error makes it impossible to use the program, even though I do have a Western Digital drive attached to the PC when I boot any of them up.
If I use the Acronis True Image Western Digital Edition program that is installed on the hard drive to perform a backup, it does recognise the attached USB Western Digital drive and it works, however if the Boot CD is used it doesn't recognise the drive and the program stops at the error message.
I have contacted Western Digital and they tried to help me but couldn't suggest any solutions and in the end they told me that I should be contacting Acronis regarding this problem.
I have searched through the Knowledgebase and Forums on both the Western Digital and Acronis sites regarding this problem. I noticed that the same problem has been reported several times, even with the full generic version of the True Image program, and that it related to missing drivers on the Boot CD.
As a solution a different boot CD ISO file was offered as a download to True Image customers through their "My Products" page, but I couldn't find the same solution offered to customers of the Western Digital Edition of the program.
Another solution that was offered was to download the trial version of the True Image program and burn a Boot CD using the trial version and use that Boot CD to do the backups/restores, however I am not too comfortable with that in case it is like using pirated software.
I'm wondering what I should do to resolve the problem. I would like to use the Western Digital Edition to perform the backups and I could do that running it from the installed hard drive software, but I need to be able to restore the backups from a bootable CD in the event the hard drive completely fails and a new hard drive has to be installed (which would not have Windows or Acronis installed on it).
Can the updated Boot CD ISO file that is offered to generic True Image customers be made available to Western Digital customers as a workaround to this problem or, although not preferred, do I download the Trial version of True Image and burn a Boot CD from that to use in the meantime?
Hope someone can help!
Regards,
Frank

Thanks for your reply MudCrab! :)
I will download the trial version and test the Boot CD it creates. It will be an interesting experiment. Hopefully it works. Whatever the result I will post the details here so that any other Western Digital Edition users are a bit wiser as to how to handle the same problem should they encounter it.
One concern I have about this solution is whether the image files created by the Western Digital Edition are compatible to be restored with the 2011 TI Trial Boot CD as an incompatibility across the two different versions of TI would make the solution unsuitable. Does anyone know if the image files are the same in these two versions?
In answer to your question, the 4 computers are of differing age and I am GUESSING of differing chipsets. The newest computers are the desktop and 1 laptop which are still not so new (they would be at least 2 - 3 years old). The other 2 laptops are older (prob 5 years old). The computers in question are my girlfriends and the enclosure I am using is hers. This TI WD Edition + External USB SATA Drive solution was my recommendation to her as she has never backed up any of her computers and that worries me.
I do have my own external USB enclosure with a Western Digital drive in it however this is an older box which is an IDE Laptop drive USB enclosure so I will also give that a try to see if I get a different result, however long term I prefer to keep my enclosure as I work on some older machines and find my enclosure is more compatible across the range of computers (she doesn't need that compatibility range for her needs and also needs a much larger hard drive to backup all her PCs). Again I will post the results of that test so others can be informed.
I do also have another type of USB -> IDE/SATA drive converter so I will also try that with a Western Digital desktop hard drive attached to it.
I don't have a desktop SATA WD drive that I could install into the desktop, so sorry, but I cannot try that suggestion.
An interesting point to make however is that I own a full version of True Image 9 (which is ancient), yet that picks up the Western Digital USB SATA drive in question perfectly, so go figure!!!
I would still like to get a copy of the special enhanced boot cd that Acronis posted on the "My Products" page for TI users to download as I prefer to backup using the boot cd, not through Windows when files are open. Is there any way I can get that as I can't "Register" the Western Digital Edition to enable me to download the enhanced boot cd that Acronis have offered as a solution to other users encountering the same problem. I would only use the enhanced boot cd as an interim measure until a fixed newer version of the Western Digital Edition is released. If someone would be so kind to provide it, it would be most appreciated.

Frank

An update on further tests regarding this problem:
Another external USB enclosure (IDE one) with a Western Digital Notebook hard drive: Successfully detected by Acronis True Image WD Edition on all 4 computers.
An external USB adapter with an IDE Western Digital Desktop hard drive: Successfully detected by Acronis True Image WD Edition on all 4 computers.
Next move will be to disassemble the WD notebook drive in the USB SATA drive enclosure that is not being picked up by Acronis True Image WD Edition and analyse it to see whether there is something different about that drive that is causing the program not to detect it as being a valid Western Digital drive. (ie. Jumper settings, whether the drive is an OEM WD drive, such as a Dell WD drive, etc.)
I will post the results once determined.
!!!NOTE!!!: I would still like to be able to get a copy of the special Boot CD that Acronis offer to its registered customers as an Emergency disk in case I cannot resolve the outstanding problem. If someone can provide this CD it would be appreciated.

Further details:
The drive in question appears normal, no special jumpers set and is an original WD800BEVS model Western Digital drive.
I downloaded Acronis True Image Home 2011 Trial and created a Bootable CD and it picked up the drive in question perfectly, so there seems to be a bug in the Western Digital Edition where it does not detect all Western Digital drives correctly.
So if anyone else encounters this problem, there appears to be no real solution to it. I found that it detects the drive using the installed Windows component of Acronis True Image WD Edition so you can backup using that and although I haven't tested it, you "should" be able to restore it using the Acronis True Image Home 2011 Trial Boot CD.
I will raise another post about how to report bugs with the Western Digital Edition of Acronis True Image as there doesn't appear to be a mechanism to do this.

Which thread would you like replies to your problem be sent?
Opening numerous threads on the same problem is likely to leave you with less help or confusing help at best.
Don't forget the trial version CD is time limited, after 30 days it can only be used for recovery purposes.

Hello Colin B,
Thanks for your reply.
I started the 2 other posts as I found them seperate requests to this one making the 3 posts:
1) (this one) Problem with WD not being recognised by WD Edition
2) General query regarding official Acronis support for WD Edition
3) Request for special boot CD that Acronis have made available on the My Products page
Maybe I am mistaken, but I thought it made more sense to have the queries as 3 seperate topics. Sorry if I am wrong.
In answer to your question I guess I would like the replies to my posts sent to the seperate post as they relate to each of them. I don't think there is much more I can do on this post as I don't see any more problem determination that I can do on this issue (the last thing I can think of doing, and it is that that I suspect is the problem, is buying a different external HD enclosure in case it is that is not being recognised by the WD Boot CD).
Rearding the trial version CD, all I would need it for is for recovery as I can backup within Windows with the WD Edition however I am concerned that that solution may not work (worried that the backups performed within Windows with the WD Edition will not be compatible with the Restore provided with the Boot CD on Acronis TI Home 2011.
This of course is a workaround to the problem I am encoutering and I prefer that the problem is solved in some way, hence why I posted the other 2 posts (even though the request for the special Boot CD is another workaround, albeit a better one).

Frank

i am also having this same problem
using 14010 with a sata WD 80GB hdd in a sata to usb case.
when i run the acronis for WD program from within vista x64 it dont detect the hdd and a popup comes up saying attach a WD hdd or click cancel or a link to buy the full version of acronis
when i use the media builder it works fine and i make a bootable dvd and i shutdown the computer then power it on
it looks like acronis is going to boot for a minute then i get the same popup as above.
idk...but i am using a WD sata hard drive still so it would be nice if someone can do a work around or something.
thanks
