Acronis2010 does not recognize Network share drives for online backup

Thread needs solution

Hi, I have been using True Image since version 9 and have had mostly luck with the various upgrades. I still consider my self a rookie so that is why I am asking for some help.
I am using TI2010 build6053 and want to create online backups. This works fine for folders on the c: drive, but TI does not recognize the network shares (D-Link). I connected the share as my K:drive. There does not seem to be a way to connect as \\networkshare\volume_1\...
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thx
fred

Hello Fred and Jim!

Thank you for your question, I will be glad to assist you with it!

Unfortunately Online backups can take an image only of the local drives, no shares - even mapped - will be included in the image. Please check chapter 8 in the User's Guide for more details - we tried to describe all the available features, so you may find it useful.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Hi Fred,

I resolved this for myself by buying GoodSync, which I evaluated as the best "partition synchronization" product out there (there are many to choose from). Having lots of local PC drive space, I synchronize my net drive "share" folder with a partition on my local drive, set for every 20 minutes. I then do ALL my Acronis backups from the local sync of the net drive. I've only got about 8GB on the net drive that I work with, and I only share it with one other PC. I'm not sure how all this stacks up in terms of total efficiency or absolute backup security. However, it sort of clicked into place in terms of "satisfaction and confidence" for me at the time I set it up a few weeks ago and I haven't turned back. The sync schedule can be set for more or less frequently. I paid about $30 each for 2 copies of Goodsync, and put one on each machine. The other PC sync's the net drive less frequently. I have not been able to test this with online backup because Acronis has been "down" there (I'll check right after this email), however, since I'm working all my Acronis tasks off a local drive, it shouldn't care. Additionally, Acronis "Non-Stop" backup will also NOT work with network drives, so I've still got a 20 minute exposure window for if the "big one" hits (or the net drive fails). Since it's mostly "word processing" grade transaction volumes, it's a tolerable risk. I've suggested to Acronis that they offer online and non-stop support for net drives, since they are clearly becoming more used in home and small business networks. Maybe Novastar will get there first! How's that for incentive?

All,

Jim, thanks. I have been a GoodSync and Acronis user for a long time. I appreciate this info as I was hoping to backup all my photos and movies to "the cloud" for quite a while. They are on a networked drive so that the whole family can get to them.

I am currently backing up to the Amazon S3 cloud directly from GoodSync. GoodSync has built-in support and I am only paying about $2/mo. I may discontinue the Acronis Online Backup if they cannot make this work. To sync to a local drive then use Acronis is double effort and uses disk space that I don't want to take up.

Many home users have networked drives, the limitations in Acronis are a challenge.
