after backup failed unable to retry backup

A recent backup failed and I want to run it again. But clicking on the "back up now" button does nothing. There is a small red dot on the bottom of the Backup icon in the left main menu panel but I can't find any explanation of what that means. I can't find any way to see a log file of what happened last time. It seems with each new version of TI the interface gets dumbed down, I seem to remember log files in the old days, especially for trouble shooting an error.
