All backups now fail after upgrade to 2015

Thread needs solution

I've been a long time user of Acronis going back to version 9. I was using version 2011 on my Windows 7 Ultimate VM to backup my computer for about a year, everything worked fine. I've performed several file restores and have had the same level of confidence with ATI since my first version.

Recently a Windows update caused my backups to start failing. So I decided it was time to update. I recently updated to 2015. Since updating I have not had a single backup complete.

My machine is a Dell OptiPlex 9010. It has 32GB of ram, a 1TB SSD for the primary drive, a 1TB magnetic as a secondary drive, and a 4TB drive as the backup media. I run Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit in a VMware vm, which is hosted by VMware Workstation 11 Linux. The host OS is PCLinuxOS, patched to current.

The backup drive has 2.7 TB of available space. Every day this machine attempts to backup but fails with 'operation failed to complete'. In researching the issue I found that ATI is writing HUGE files to the temp directory. Since my Temp directory is stored on a ramdisk - currently 14GB in size - it has limited disk space available. I have upped the size of my ramdisk twice, increasing it 4GB from it's original size, in order to keep ATI from running out of space with temp files that are begin written to the temp directory.

On the current backup my temp space is already down to 3.48GB and steadily decreasing. The backup is only at 82%.

I haven't had a backup complete since 6/15 and need to get this working as all of my work files and data are at risk.

Is there a way to change the drive that is storing temp files?

Here is an example of the files that are being created on the temp drive/ramdisk:

DemonData.swapFile.dat~H57JUCG0

Currently the backup is running and there are 8 of these files, ranging in size from 1kb to almost 4GB.

Here is an example of the file that is created on the backup drive:

I don't know of any way to customize where ATI stores these temporary files. If I were you, I would backup the entire system using the recovery CD.

If within 30 days of purchase, you can contact Acronis for direct suppot.

If your temp file is on a ram drive, you might consider a conventional disk for the temp file.

Were you successful in making a backup when booted from the TI Recovery CD?

I'm much more likely to contact Acronis for a full refund, as I am within 2 weeks of purchase.

I'm more than happy to move the temp files to another location. In fact in the original post I asked if there is a way to do this, you know, like changing a config file or something?

I've never created a TI Recovery CD. Once I heard that they only work with Win OS's (is that true?) I decided I would continue to use an Acronis Recovery CD that I created from one of the earlier versions.

Thanks.

This problem seems to occur with a very low frequency so little attention has been focused on it as a result. It has been a reported problem going back a number of versions. There is some relationship between this error and Windows VSS service. You might attempt disabling Windows VSS and attempting backup again. No guarantee but worth a try!

David,
Rememberf the Recovey CD only works with backups from the same or prior version backups.
An older Recovery CD cannot verify or recover a backup created by a newer verson program.

Well, the backups are all TI 2011 backups, as TI 2015 never completed a single backup. So today I brought in an old 2011 Recovery CD and tried to do a backup with that, and it locked up at the destination selection screen. So still no backup.

I tried to reinstall 2011, but it still fails to start with an APPCRASH. So I uninstalled it (or so I thought). Turns out I had to manually edit the registry and delete all acronis keys, manually disable the acronis nonstop backup service (which didn't disappear after uninstallation and registry key deletion), delete files from C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis, then reboot, then delete some more files, then reboot, then delete the rest of the files and directories. Oh and I had to manually uninstall the acronis device driver from Device Manager.

Now I can't get Windows Backup to run, even though I've set VSS and Windows Backup services to automatic and turned them on.

This has been an amazingly frustrating experience, the likes of which I never experienced with TI 9 nor 11.

My machine is still jacked, requiring a startup repair every second or third time I restart the VM.

Just in case you are wondering, I'm running VMware Workstation 11.1.2 (just updated it yesterday). My VMware Tools are the latest and greatest.

Try creating a backup with the 2011 cd but make the destinaton to be a 2tb disk or smaller.

Do not have the a 3TB or 4Tb connected when using the 2011 CD.

Is no one able to comment on why 2011 would work for over a year and then suddenly stop working? Why 2011 can't even be uninstalled without extreme manual intervention? Or why the nonstop backup service seems to be unremovable?

How about why this 2011 install, which has worked so well for so long, has completely jacked the Windows Backup software? I thought that M$ licensed ATI for Windows Backup? Aren't they at least similar in tech or the libraries that are used?

How about how to have 2015 cache in a different location than the temp directory?

Anyone??

As for removing the 4TB backup drive, no I don't have another medium that can backup 221GB of data/files. That's what I bought the 4TB for! And that's the media that 2011 was backing up to for over a year!
