ALL my partition backups are suddenly not valid......... how can this be?

Today I was going to make partition backup of my system and when it auto validated it came back with the dreadful message BACKUPS ARE INVALID. What? They were fine when I last used them now they are all no good?
I have come to the conclusion that since the backups AREN'T corrupted when I validate using a USB cable to the external the trouble is in the eSata cable or the external eSata PCI card. The eSata connections to the HD and the PCI adapater card were never that good, I can see why they don't make them anymore they are too sketchy.
