ATI 2010 Automatic Consolidation Doesn't Save Settings for Full Backups

Thread needs solution

I am getting very frustrated with this issue. Chat support is of no help; they insist the settings will be saved only in the case of incremental or differential backups (which they do), I don't want to use either method. All I want to do is carry out the following scenario, taken directly from the ATI 2010 User Manual. The problem is it doesn't save the automatic consolidation settings for full backups. I know full backups can't be "consolidated", but the following indicates it will simply delete the oldest one:

"13.4. Examples of backup scheduling scenarios

13.4.1. Full backups with automatic deletion on quota violation

Some users prefer creating only full backups. A full backup has the shortest recovery time compared to incremental or differential ones and, in addition, many consider it more reliable, since the program needs just one file when recovering a backup.
Let's suppose you have plenty of room on the hard disk dedicated to storing backups and want to have five full backups of the system disk made weekly thus spanning a period of about a month. In addition, you want to ensure automatic deletion of the oldest backup in order to keep just five backups in the backup archive. Here's how it can be done:

a) When you come to the "Scheduling" step while configuring a backup task, it is necessary to select the "Weekly" option, leave the default value "Run the task every 1 week", then select a day of the week for making backups, e.g. Saturday.

b) At the "Backup method" step choose the "Full" method and unselect the "A new full backup overwrites the previous one" check box (selected by default).

c) At the "Automatic consolidation" step it is necessary to select the "Number of backups exceeds" check box and set a limit of five backups, then finish configuring the backup task. The program will create full backups starting from the nearest Saturday and will accumulate the first five backups in the archive. On the sixth run the program will create a sixth backup thus exceeding the limit on the number of backups. As it is not possible to consolidate full backups, the program will simply delete the oldest backup. This procedure will be repeated during the next task run, etc.

Of course, this backup scenario can be used for making full backups more and less frequently, for example, on daily or monthly basis – users just need to set an appropriate schedule. In the given backup scenario you could achieve the same result by selecting the "Storage period of old backups exceeds (days):" check box and setting the number of days to 30, for example. The program will delete the oldest backup when its storage period exceeds 30 days, leaving five backups that are "younger" than 30 days."

It doesn't save the automatic consolidation setting. Any ideas would be appreciated.

To Acronis Reps:

Either the manual is wrong or the program has a bug. Please tell me which so I can get on with selecting backup software and planning a backup strategy for my office. Thanks.

Which build of TIH 2010 are you using? Currently there are issues with build 6053 when doing only full backups. I think this tread may have some answers for you.

Thanks, garryj. I'm using b6053. I'll check that tread. I just wish Acronis would at least admit there is a problem, so I can get on with it. Geeze!

I just found this problem. I'd like a rolling window of 2 full backups: today's and yesterday's. When I try to set this with automatic consolidation the settings don't stay saved. Doh.

Hello all,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help. Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.
We have a similar issue with the automatic consolidation option, probably, the issue described in this thread  is the same one. If you create a task to perform only full backups leaving "A new full backup overwrites the previous one" box unchecked, automatic consolidation is not saved after editing a task. Our QA team was able to reproduce the issue, and our developers are working to create a fix.
Please see this thread for more information.
Therefore, to be sure that we met another issue, please create a new task from the scratch and see if the issue remains. If the issue still persists, please obtain the below information and send the files to me via  Private Message with the reference to this thread.
1)  Download AcronisInfo file ;

Run the downloaded file. The gathered information will be put in AcronisInfo.zip in the same folder, where the AcronisInfo was saved.
Running AcronisInfo may take up to 5 minutes.

2) Please provide us with the appropriate task script. The file is located at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts (Windows XP) or at C:\Users\All Users\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts (Windows Vista/7) and has the tib.tis extension. You can identify the required file by the date of its creation.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience. If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other questions do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.
Thank you.

Richard,
A workaround solution which is easy to implement is to use the Chain2Gen helper program. Check the link inside my signature below. Chain2Gen does an excellent job of helping you to control how many backup archives are to be retained and when a new backup is to be created. Read the reference and ask any questions you might have.

I was using Build #6053 and was also having problems with the Automatic Consolidation's "Number of Backups" not staying set between edits. So I updated the software to Build #7046 and the problem with the Number of Backups not staying is fixed!

BUT.. even though the value stays in the script of the task, the consolidation is not being done.

I'm using a home network connecting to my HP PC (Vista) and a NetGear ReadyNAS+ for storage of the backup.

And the location of the script (I don't have an "c:\users\all users..." folder) must be wrong in your forum response.

Hello FHWA_Retiree,

Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

First of all, please note that C:\Users\All Users\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts is a hidden folder and you need to unhide it in Windows Explorer settings.

Additionally, please submit your request with the gathered AcronisInfo output to our support directly.

Thank you.
