ATI 2011 - consolidation does not support backup splitting ?
in thread http://forum.acronis.com/forum/19734 i was discussing the backup splitting for scheduled backups.
i'm now using ATI 2011 and discovered that backup schemes now support "backup splitting" (as opposed to ATI 10). good. i can now avoid serious file system fragmentation and performance degradations as i'm splitting the tib files by 25 GB per default.
here comes the next question:
i use scheduled backups to create a full backup followed by N subsequent differential backups.
sometimes i'd like to manually clean up (i.e. delete) certain backups.
i've read somewhere that it's no longer recommended to directly delete the tib files in the file system. instead, it's required to do it via the GUI of ATI.
i found it pretty difficult to figure out how to actually do this kind of cleaning up.
the only option i found was to invoke "consolidate backups" where i can manually select the backups to "keep". all of the un-selected backups will be deleted.
however, ATI is going to "merge" the backup to keep into one single *.tib file.
so even if i want to keep just one single of the "full" backups and delete all of the others: the full backup was initially split into 10 files - 25 GB each. after consolidation i'm ending up with one single 250 GB tib file, again!
question1: so it seems the "consolidation" is badly lacking the feature to also implement backup splitting?
a) well, actually i don't want to "merge" anything. all i want to do is to "delete" some of the images i created along the road. it's either "keep" or "delete". simple as that.
b) note: but if i really wanted a "merge" one day than it should support splitting, too.
question2: but maybe i'm looking in the wrong direction. is there any other recommended way to manually delete certain backups?

thanks for the clarification, pat.
regarding the task to "manually clean up / delete certain versions" i was on the wrong track, actually.
as you pointed out: the right way is to go for "explore and recover" or "explore all versions".
at the very bottom of the "backup explorer" there's a weird timeline:
- first i have to RMB on it to open the context menu and say "expand".
- then i can RMB context menu of a backup and invoke "delete version".
in case i encounter additional problems regarding this task i'll create a new dedicated discussion thread for this.
anyhow, the initial thread title still holds true:
if i really wanted to consolidate and merge some chains i still want the merged container to also be split.
seems to be impossible, at current state. is it on the wish list already?

Yeah... I have encountered issues when delete partial backups, so I don't do for my system. Make sure you validate your backups after the deletion...
You can submit your slitting feature request on the (already long) wish list on the stickies.
