ATI 2013, Acronis Boot CD: displays unrecognizable text and many color

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I had a functioning Boot CD last year, but after updating to Windows 8.1 and testing the Boot CD: see Subject

Using the Acronis Media Builder for creating a new boot cd, then booting:
brief unrecognizable OutputText, then immediately booting from Windows

Please help !

Siegried, when you updated to Windows 8.1 did you also change your computer hardware?

The reason for my question is that later systems boot differently to earlier ones, i.e. more modern systems mainly boot via UEFI in conjunction with Secure Boot and use of GPT partitions to support larger disk drives, whereas older systems boot via BIOS / MBR partitions.

Please see webpage: Check if your PC uses UEFI or BIOS for details of how to check which boot method your Windows 8.1 system uses.

The Acronis bootable Rescue Media must be booted by the same method as used for Windows 8.1.

The rescue media created by the final build 6514 of True Image 2013 had a multitude of issues. Login to your Aronis account and download the Bootable Media ISO file. Right click the ISO file and select Burn Disc Image to create a bootable rescue CD. This CD is based on unreleased build 6528 and resolves many of the problems.

Thanks for your comments.

- My PC uses UEFI-Mode

- Download Bootable media file:
  this is an exe-file:
    Build: #6514(?) Size: 386.38 MB
    Date: 2013-04-04 00:00:00
I couldn't found an ISO-File or does the exe create an ISO-File ?
  Couldn't find an 6528 build.

Excuse me, now I'm downloading the ISO-file.

Now I've downloaded and burned the ISO-File.
Result of Booting:
brief unrecognizable OutputText, then immediately booting from Windows

Siegfried, have you checked whether you have Secure Boot enabled - if so, please try disabling this.

my laptop -> regedit -> HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecureBoot\State: UEFISecureBootEnabled=0

that means I believe "Secure Boot disabled"

my laptop uses EFI (/Windows/Panther) not UEFI (is there a difference ?)

EFI or UEFI is the same thing.

See KB document: 5684: EFI Based Operating Systems Support in Acronis Products which shows that ATIH 2013 supports EFI and thus can be booted in either Legacy (BIOS / MBR) or EFI mode.

We have seen issues in the forums where some systems do not support booting from CD/DVD media in EFI mode where it is needed to create USB Rescue Media to get around this.

Many thanks Steve ! Now I have created a bootable USB-stick with the Media Builder and I could boot from this media !

My original intention was to recreate missing xml-files belonging to some backups.

My question: these files are needed ?
If so how to refresh respectively to recreate these files ?

Siegfried, what particular XML files are you referring to here?

If these are the files within the Acronis Database folder then these should be recreated when you either validate or run the backup task.

These are the files within the Acronis Database folder.- In my folder there are 2 xml-files with a very old creation date:

31.10.2015  20:30                 0 8B5D4C96-FB42-4840-A007-C74C65B8BB8C.lck
01.10.2015  01:59    <DIR>          Catalog
01.10.2015  01:59                 0 E52A5E44-2049-4386-818E-E60AB61A3737.lck
01.10.2015  01:59             2.178 Meine Daten_full_b1_s1_v.xml
31.10.2015  20:29             2.179 Meine Daten_full_b2_s1_v.xml
10.05.2016  12:35    45.723.724.288 Meine Daten_full_b7_s1_v1.tib
30.06.2016  19:46    46.077.970.432 Meine Daten_full_b8_s1_v1.tib
26.07.2016  13:29    45.905.059.840 Meine Daten_full_b9_s1_v1.tib
01.10.2015  01:59                 0 meta_info.lck
01.10.2015  01:59                 0 operation.lck

I don't know how to recreate these and how to validate an existing backup !

Siegfried, thank you for the file listing from your Acronis Database folder.

If I read the file listing correctly, you have 3 full backup image files in this folder which isn't recommended - these should be stored on a different disk drive ideally and the Database folder should only hold the database files that ATIH 2013 creates there.

I would recommend moving these 3 backup files to another location, then renaming the Database folder to Database.OLD - you should stop all Acronis Processes and Services before attempting the rename to avoid any locks on the files in the folder.  When you relaunch the ATIH application it will recreate both the Database folder and the files needed in the same.

Note: If you have any backup tasks that relate to the 3 backup files, i.e. Meine Daten - then you will need to update the Destination location for this task to point to the new home for these backup files after you have moved them from the Database folder.

Now I have created a new full backup in a new folder of my backup-disk. This backup contains only a tib-file without other files, no Catalog-folder, no xml-files.
Is this a valid backup ?

As you could see in former backups of  the file-listing there were xml-files and a Catalog-folder, all these were created by ATIH.

I don't know what is right.

Siegfried, those other files should be in the Acronis Database folder and not in the same folder as you have stored your backup images.

Steve please tell me:

- This new full backup is the only file in a folder of my external disk, is this a valid backup usable for any possible recovery ?

- this " Acronis Database folder " you mentioned, where is it located: on the backup-disk or on the filesystem of my laptop (for example "/ProgramData/Acronis/TrueImageHome/..."?

- in some older folders of the backup-disk there are sometimes xml-files created by ATIH, why such data are missing in my actual folder ?

Siegfried, your new full backup should be fine and fully usable for future recovery as the only file in your external disk drive folder.  I do not have a current system with ATIH 2013 installed so cannot say whether I have seen any instances where there have been XML files in the target folders.

The Acronis Database files should be located in the hidden system folder: C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database

On my system with ATIH 2014 I only have 2 XML files (Archives.XML and Mounted.XML) in the Database folder and only my .TIB files in my storage folder.

Many thanks for your comments.

Now a last question:

I have defined the backup-options as follows:
full backup / maximum 3 backups in the storage folder / without planning
execution of a backup manually every month

Is it okay ?

Siegfried, your backup options should be fine providing that you have sufficient space in your storage folder to hold at least 4 backups as the 4th backup must be successfully created before the oldest backup is deleted.
