ATI 2013 Failed to open backup, but looking for old backup?
Had ATI 2013 setup running backups and was working well (on Windows 8). Had to swap a secondary drive and ATI stopped working.
Tried to delete backups and it would just churn forever. Found information that stated just manually delete the files and delete the "settings only" backup in ATI. I did that.
Setup 2 new backups (1 for each disk) and ran it. It stopped about 4/5 of the way through and I get the following error:
Failed to open backup G: \Disk0_1_PArtitionSR_C_P_Z_Disk_01_PartitionSR_C_C_P_Z__2013-08-16_inc_b6_s7_v1.tib
For starters, this is not an appropriate file name, not sure why it is listed like this, but this is actually an old filename that was created using the old backup scheme that I deleted.
So now I cannot make my new backups work because it keeps looking for the old ones, even though they are not lsited in the backups any longer?

Still having this issue on subsequent runs of backup. It tries to delete this backup that is non-existent any longer and fails out every backup I do. It appears as though the actual backup does get done, but the log shows it as failed. Very annoying.

I have a similar problem. Acronis 2013
I am using Differential Backup that will create a new full copy every forth time. It is supposed to, and does, delete older backups.
I get a fail message:
Failed to open backup M:\My Backups\My differential partitions\My differential partitions _diff_b11_s4_v1.tib. Make sure the backup location is accessible and contains all versions of the backup. This backup may also be corrupted.
If you click on Cancel another similar error message opens:
Failed to open backup M:\My Backups\My differential partitions\My differential partitions _diff_b13_s4_v1.tib. Make sure the backup location is accessible and contains all versions of the backup. This backup may also be corrupted.
Hit Cancel again and then similar message:
Failed to open backup M:\My Backups\My differential partitions\My differential partitions _diff_b14_s4_v1.tib. Make sure the backup location is accessible and contains all versions of the backup. This backup may also be corrupted.
Hit Cancel again and get:
Failed to open backup M:\My Backups\My differential partitions\My differential partitions _diff_b15_s4_v1.tib. Make sure the backup location is accessible and contains all versions of the backup. This backup may also be corrupted.
Cancel again and get:
Failed to open backup M:\My Backups\My differential partitions\My differential partitions _diff_b16_s4_v1.tib. Make sure the backup location is accessible and contains all versions of the backup. This backup may also be corrupted.
Cancel again and get:
"The backup completed with errors" then
the screen view saying "The backup is valid"
I have attached a view of the folder layout. One can see there is one big file followed by three smaller ones.
One can see that the first is dated Aug 30 and then starts: b21_s1 (a 138 mb file, followed by b21_s2 (a 33mb file), then b21_s3 and b21_s4.
Then you go to b22_s1, then b22_s2 etc.
Clearly these refer to each set of differential files. Thus the fail errors above are referring to older, and long ago deleted files.
Very infuriating.

Norman,
Would you consider posting a screen shot of your backup scheme so we might better visualize all the settings you are using for controls.

I have attached a screen copy of my backup options.
As can be seen it makes one full copy, adds to it three times then starts over.
After two full sets the old ones are deleted.

Thank you Norman,
It has worked 21 times and now gets mixed up. Do you know of anything that has occurred within the past two or 3 chains--perhaps following the deletion of the old ones. Has the task been edited, or have you performed a restore or reinstalled TI. I admit, I have no explanation for it failing after working 21 times.

Sometimes I continue to work and change files while the backup is running. But this still doesn't really explain why the software should be looking for files that it deleted a couple of weeks ago.
Just bad software design I think. It appears Acronis may have assumed everyone would use the Incremental backup system and didn't devote much effort to de-bugging the Differential system.
I will try deleting the setup and re-creating it.
I understand the difference between the two is that the Incremental forms more or less an endless chain of backups and if just one of the links in that chain is broken you are in trouble and nothing after it can be recovered.
Many thanks.

You can try to fix the problem task. Try validating starting with the most recent. The program will balk but keep responding to the post until you work your way back through the missing files. After you tell the program to ignore those files, it may start working again.

Hi Grover:
What I did was delete the backup schedule altogether and all the backups.
I am now starting over with a new Backup Schedule and let's see if there are problems again.
Apart from the full backup I have of the entire C: drive onto an external drive I also have a second backup running 3 hours earlier of just the most vital files, financial etc. onto a SD card.
This gives double insurance in case of a crash.
Thanks again for your help.

Possibly not. It would be safer to do a backup of the entire disk, not just the C: partition.
Many users seek help here after discovering that C: alone does not provide a bootable disk. There are often critical files located on partitions other than C:, often hidden partitions.
Backing up the entire disk is the safest route.

Hi Tuttle:
Sorry, I did not mention that I do not partition the C: drive.
I do backup the entire contents of the disk onto an external 1TB drive.

The disk may have partitions that you did not create. The only way to be sure is to check in Windows Disk Management.
Creating a full disk backup ensures that you have everything, without needing to understand how the disk is laid out. It also ensures that the MBR and disk signature are included.

Many thanks. I looked at My Computer. It shows two hard disk drives. C: and M: (the 1 TB external one).
I also looked at Acronis > Disk Backup > Configure Disk Backup Process.
There is a check mark for two drives: Recovery and Local Disk (C:)
They both backup to a folder on the M: drive
So I think I'm OK.
Thank you again for your help.

Norman,
Your type backup is what is referred to as a "partition type or partition mode" backup.
My preference for type is the "disk mode or disk image" backup. This mode selects the disk as the selection and it will automatically include all partitions--even those which are hidden or unlettered. Click on link #2 below and it will illustrate the difference.
