ATI 2014 and backing up Windows 8.1 to external USB flash drive

Thread needs solution

I just purchased a new laptop and was trying to do a full backup to USB flash drive using ATI 2014 bootable CD. At first wasn't able to boot to CD until I turned off UEFI and enabled legacy boot option in the BIOS of the laptop. However when I tried to backup hard drive on laptop it does not see the USB flash drive at all. Tried plugging into all three USB slots and nothing worked (rebooting and restarting program each time).

I would like instructions on how to backup Windows 8.1 from a bootable CD to and external USB device. Please include all instructions include BIOS setup in case I missed something else. By the way the USB flash drive does work in Windows 8.1 when plugged in. I also have an external USB hard drive that I am going to try in the near future.

Also, the hard drive is 750GB with just Windows 8.1, security updates, and a few programs (that were installed after bootup - like Office, Adobe reader/player, etc.) that I would like to have backup in case I need to replace the hard drive. Also I believe it has a hidden partition with the Windows 8.1 setup files as well. Want to ensure I capture an exact copy of the hard drive if something should fail down the road.

Thank you for your time.

Kevin
