ATI 2014 and cloud access
Recently, ATI 2014 suddenly started refusing to perform its usual file and system partition backups on my system. The event log suggests that TI 2014 is suddenly unhappy with the lack of an activated subscription to Acronis Cloud, which it now insists must be in place to use the Sync feature.
But I don't use the Sync feature; never have and don't want it. Neither do I have any interest in paying some ungodly subscription fee for unlimited use of Acronis Cloud. I have been quite content with backing up to an external drive and do not wish to change that.
I have tried registering for the Sync feature by accepting a trial account. But it insists that I download an executable named <AcronisTrueImage2016_web.exe>, which I don't see any use for and don't want to install without some good reason to do so, so I cancelled that download. If I could find some info about that executable, I might be willing to install it.
How do I get TI 2014 to continue making the backups it has cheerfully done for 2 1/2 years on Win 7 and for 6 months on Win 10?
And if I must activate a trial subscription to Acronis Cloud, can I let it expire without losing the ability to make local backups?

Steve --
Thanks for a detailed and comprehensive response.
I've applied the ATI 2016 update that I bought last February and hadn't gotten around to installing. The install wasn't entirely uneventful, but it's now in place and seems to be functioning as expected -- except for one backup job that refuses to run. I note that it carries the legend "never backed up" in spite of the fact that it was providing the expected backup in ATI 2014 until the whole thing went sideways 2 weeks ago. That backup job carried the same note in ATI 2014.
I'm assuming there's something offside in that backup job, so I'll kill it and set up a replacement. If that doesn't work, well, I guess I'll be back.
One side note: I see that ATI 2014 failed when it attempted its usual backups on the first occasion after Microsoft's Patch Tuesday. Perhaps there was something in one of the patches applied on that occasion that broke ATI 2014.
Cheers...
