ATI 2014 disconnects USB ext hard drive

Thread needs solution

I am using ATI 2014 to back up a Windows 7 Pro PC to a Lacie external hard drive via a USB 3 connection. The external drive works flawlessly with other applications when connected to this computer and chkdsk reveals no problems with it. After many attempts, I successfully created one backup (a disk image) to this drive, but now I am unable to validate it.

ATI initially sees the external drive. I can mount and access files from the one successful backup without any problem. Within seconds of trying to perform a new backup or validate the existing one, the external drive disconnects from the PC. Acronis says the backup location can't be found. The external drive is no longer visible in Windows Explorer. I turn the external drive off and back on and it reconnects. It again works flawlessly until I try to do a backup or validate one, when it promptly disconnects again.

Anyone have any ideas?

My guess is that this is a power setting either in Windows or the disk or both.
There couldbe some settings which need to always on rather than a "green power saver" settings.
A starting point would be your power configuration settings.
An additonal check could be in the
Device Manager, under the usb, under the Root hub and uncheck the turn off power option when not in use.

I have the same problem with ATI 2014 failing to complete backup because it cannot add a volume during the backup process. Sometimes the backup uses only one large volume and then it always completes successfully. However, if the backup starts creating smaller volumes eventually it tries to create a new volume and external USB 3.0 Drive (a Seagate Drive) results in an error reporting it cannot find the new volume it is trying to create on the external USB 3.0 drive. If the external USB 3.0 Drive is connected to a USB 2.0 port on the ASUS M51AC Desktop with Windows 8.1, it always creates just one volume and does not fail. Changing the timeouts for power options was not successful for the USB 3.0 Port but the USB 2.0 Port did not care if the power time outs occurred. Disabling the USB Deselection in the Device Manager did not make any difference either.
So now I just use the USB 2.0 port even though one the main reasons to get the new desktop was its USB 3.0 support.

I still believe this to be a power settings issue--somewhere or perhaps the disk writing is occrring too fast.

I don't have 8.1 or 8.0 but I have not had a usb3 issue on writes regarding a backup.

I would check to see if there is a updated driver for your USB 3.0 port. There have been numerous reports about power setting issues with various USB 3.0 chipsets. I have a Renesas / NEC chipset in my HP Elitebook 8560w and I had to update to the 2.1.36 or 2.1.39 driver with the latest firmware before the port would become completely stable.

Hi,

Same problem here. It only started to happen after I upgraded to build 6673 from previous build of True Image 2014 on Windows 8.1.

When on a schedule, the backup gives an error message as it can't find the file / drive. Works OK if I trigger the backup manually.

Hello everyone,

There are 3 elements to check for with this problem for a good starting point. Two of those have already been pointed out here, power and drivers. The thiird is connectors/cabling. Make sure all connections are snug and complete, cabling should be seperated from power wires or other cables by as much distance as possible, and the highest grade cabling available/affordable should always be used. Users having these issues sbould make certain these three elements are good before further troubleshooting as these will solve 90% of the issues.

I just started to have this issue with windows 7 and ti 2015. I made changes to USB 3 root setting for the driver not to close the drive and I made changes to power settings. I did a full backup of my machine ok. After the fact I did a validate and the drive was dropped during the validation process. I checked the acronis event code but acronis could not find the exaxct event code. I've run check disk on the drive with no errors. How can a simple thing like a validation fail? Anyone have a solution yet. I bought this drive to use USB 3.0 but now do I need to downgrade to USB 2.0. The ironic thing is that when I use USB 2.0 connection windows gives me a message that I have a speedier option available.

I'm having this problem with windows 7 with TI 2015. I made changes to driver, made changes to power setting and I'm using the usb 3.0 cable that came with external drive. I made a complete backup of my machine OK and later did a validation that failed due to drive although showing on light with blue light on was not present to windows. Anyone find a solution yet> I want to use usb 3.0 because it is much faster. Any further thoughts?
