ATI - 2014 - To Make Bootable or Not

Thread needs solution

New to the product.  I want to be able to restore my entire Drive C: including the operating system (Windows 7), files, data etc.  I want a disk image so that in the event of a hard disk failure or OS failure I can copy to a new drive or copy from my backup to the current drive, restore it and be good to go.  I don't think disk clone has been recommended (not certain why).  Also do I put a check in the make media bootable or not?  What effect does that have on the restore.  Is it just in place of booting from a CD/DVD prior to the restore?

Thank you in advance for your replies

Acronis True Image is designed to do what you need, i.e. to create a complete backup of your entire OS drive contents.

To create that complete backup, you should have a second hard drive (internal or external) that the backup image can be stored on, and from where it can be restored from in the event of the need to recover the system.

One important task that you should do straight away is to create the bootable rescue media on CD or DVD or USB memory stick and test that you can boot from this and see all of your disk drives - those you will be making backup image(s) of, and those that your backups will be stored on or restored from.

The option for make media bootable is really intended for when removable optical media is used for storing your backup images on, i.e. backing up your system to CD or DVD media, but on most modern systems I would not recommend doing so - you will need a whole stack of CDs or DVD's on most systems, and these are too easy to get damaged to entrust your system backup to.

I would recommend reading through the initial sections of the ATIH 2014 User Guide for an introduction to using this software.

Eightd2,

If you are backing up to another hard drive (internal or external), the make media bootable is not checked (and should be inoperative).  This is only if you are backing up to DVDs...it would make the first DVD in the sequence bootable.
