ATI 2014 Operations still running on laptop shutdown

Thread needs solution

Hi everyone:

I'm running into a intermittent problem with my Win 7 Pro laptop having problems shutting down, even when I don't use ATI.  I've tried using two batch files to shut down any runnning Acronis processes, which seem to be the problem (Scheduler, especially) but now even they don't seem to work.  The batch files are KillAcronis.batand xy.bat. As a temporary fix I've disabled any Acronis processes that are running and will turn them on when I do my next image backup, but there has to be a simpler way, right?

I'm running Build 6673, and if I'm not mistaken, there is a newer build out there. Would that help?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I have never had this problem on my desktop PC ... knock on wood.

Christopher, first of all this is a known issue that has been encountered across multiple different versions of ATI, including the latest ATIH 2016.  The Acronis developers are working on producing a fix for this for the 2016 version in a new build that is due to be released sometime soon.

For your ATIH 2014 build 6673 is the latest and last build for that product, so there is no software fix for this issue for you.

However, the remedy that has worked for a number of users reporting this issue in the forums is to perform a clean install of the ATI product - this is accomplished by using the Acronis Cleanup Tool - there is a link to this in my signature below - then reinstalling ATI again.

The one downside to doing a clean install is that you will lose all your current existing backup tasks as all of the Acronis programs and data will be removed, so once you have reinstalled ATI you will need to recreate your backup tasks.

ATI will find any existing backup images on connected drives and you can reconfigure your backup tasks from these.

So Steve, are you saying I will need to install the program twice? That seems a bit weird.  What is accomplished by the second installation?  Currently I've got Scheduler and Nonstop Back disabled under services.msc.  My thinking is to keep that way until I need to do a back up, that activate those processes.  What is the advantange of your double clean install?  Just wondering .....

Christopher - not just installing it again, but remvoing the existing instance with the clean tool (not control panel) and letting it clean it out of the system and registry completely and then reinstall "fresh" again in.  I would defintely recommend a clean install if things are not working as they should because the install may have been corrupted or the application may have had something impact it along the way (AV, malwarey, Windows service, Windows update, etc) that is preventing it from functioning correctly.  As you mention there is a newer version, removing the old first (clean tool) will help give the new version a fresh foundation to install on as well. Newer versions generally offer bug fixes and better funtionality so won't hurt to try it over the old version anyway.

Release Notes for Acronis True Image 2014 Update 3 build 6688

Hi Steve and Bobbo:

I used the Acronis Uninstall, which worked fine, but had problems with the serial number when trying to install the initial program off the disk.  I used a downloaded copy of the latest build and the serial number worked, but now the problem seems to have reappeared.  I know this because I have disabled all three ATI processes and Win 7 Pro shuts down normally.  Should I do the uninstall again and reinstall the latest build? I'm a little nervous because I'm not sure it will accept the serial number this time, even though I'm using a 3PC disc version of 2014 Premium.

Thanks for your help!

Chris

I suppose it goes without saying, but I would be reinstalling it to the same machine, my laptop.

Hi Chris, sorry .to hear that the problem has come back again after doing the previous clean install.

There should be no problem with re-entering your serial number for ATIH 2014, this is tied to your computer hardware so will see the same machine as you had previously installed on.

The real question is whether doing another reinstall will do anything more than just give you a temporary reprieve from the same problem coming back again?  Unfortunately there is no further updates for ATIH 2014 so this is a decision that only you can make at this point.

Hi Steve:

The problem occurred after a recent Windows update, so that was probably the culprit.  Since neither AT 2015 or 2016 have solutions to this problem either (or do they?) I think I'll just do the reinstall and see how long it lasts.  The other option is to do the reinstall and then just disable ATI until I need to use it.  But if Windows update is the cause, then I'm not sure that will really solve the problem, since it might rear its ugly head after the next update.  What do you think?

By the way, this happened after Windows update failed and I had to have Lenovo tech support remotely fix the problem. Funny thing is, the laptop, which is having the problem, is running Win 7 Pro but my desktop is running Win 7 Home Premium, and the desktop has not had this issue.

Again, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Chris

Hi Chris, if a Windows update was the cause of this problem then another reinstall may fix this again, assuming that the Windows Update upset something that the install can put right, such as a required DLL at a particular version etc.

ATIH 2016 build 6569 was released to include a fix for this problem along with others - see the List of Changes.

Hi Steve:

I did a clean install with the latest build for 2014 and so far no problems.  We'll have to see how things go after the next Windows update :)

Thanks for your help!
