ATI Echo Workstation 8163 and Win7 64-bit - incompatable?

Thread needs solution

I am using Acronis True Imaging Echo Workstation build 8163 currently and have been using it for a long while now to image and reimage different OS's for software testing purposes. Lately I have been starting to include the Win7 RTMs since we are a developer. I have loaded and imaged to and from Win 7 32-bit with no trouble so far, but imaging to Win 7 Professional 64-bit has proved difficult.

I loaded the OS and made an image backup successfully. The trouble is when I load up Acronis (using the CD boot method) and elect to restore the Win 7 image. Everything is normal until I get to the prompt asking which drive I want to restore to. I have one big drive partitioned into two - one for the OS and the other for storage of the OS images. Normally I elect to restore the OS partition and I get no trouble. When I try to restore to Win 7 I get to this prompt and the OS drive (C) is greyed out. The only thing I have to go on is what is written on the screen: The partitions already restored are checked off and disabled. The locations without enough space for restoring the image are disabled as well."

Now, my Win 7 image is 31.76 GB (I think cuz I forgot to delete the windows.old folder before I imaged). Regardless, the image is 32GB and the drive has 41GB free (out of 48GB) - so there is enough space. I can image the same machine to Vista 64 with no troubles.

So my question is - is there somthing I am not doing. Does my version of Acronis not work with Win7 64-bit?

Another option I have left to try is to re-load the OS and try again - I am going to try that and post back with the results.

Ok, I reinstalled Win 7 64, updated it and deleted the Windows.old file. I successfully made an image of the OS which is a whopping 4.9GB...compared to the 32GB I had before.

I then imaged to an XP OS and then back to Win 7 64 with no issues. *shrugs*

The point is it works now...woohoo

Hello Ryan,

Thank you for using Acronis True Image

At the moment, the following Acronis products support Windows 7:

(!) Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 supports Windows 7 with the following limitations:

  • Mounting backups stored in Acronis Secure Zone is not possible;
  • Mounting backups located on a network share in read/write mode is not possible;
  • The Active Restore feature is not available when restoring a system volume in Windows from a backup stored in Acronis Secure Zone;
  • User accounts generated for Acronis services during the product installation may appear on the Windows 7 logon screen;
  • Acronis Storage Node does not support tape drives. See Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Tape Support in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7.

To have fully functional version which is compatible with Windows 7 I would recommend you to purchase an upgrade.
