ATI12 Turns off My Virus Protection?

Thread needs solution

I am noticing that when I am running a backup or restore that my Trend Internet Security 12 and my Windows Defender repeatedly get turned off. Is this normal? If I see the turn off message, I turn them back on, but usually they are turned off again. Is this normal? Is it dangerous? Any way around it???? Thanks for your help. As a new user I wouldn't have survived without reading this forum!!

...I should have mentioned that upon the advice of the Trend forum, I ran a malware detection program "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware"and my computer passed its tests.

Pamela,

It is possible that a software conflict crashes the Trend services. This would be visible in the Windows Event Viewer. THere would be a message that the service crashed and was restarted.
It is however unlikely that the source of the conflict is ATI 2012, although possible.
Even less likely for Windows Defender.
My hunch is that this is a security software issue that is independent from the Backup software.
Did you try to uninstall and reinstall the Trend Internt Security suite?

My observation is Trend is shut off only when I'm running Acronis - at least that is the only time I've noticed it. The Windows message is that Trend is not on and Defender is not on. However, that may be misleading because I think with using Trend I do NOT use Defender.

I poked around in the Windows Event Viewer but wasn't sure what I was looking for. Can you give me any ideas where messages about this would reside? If I can find a specific message, I could probably determine if it is something I need to discuss with Trend.

I haven't done an uninstall on Trend but will if I must, LOL - it would be nice to find the log first if possible.

Launch event viewer, in the left panel, unfold custom views, select administrative events. Look for events with the Source column that says "service control".

See an example attached. It shows a service that crashed. You can reconcile with backup times maybe.

Thanks so much for that careful explanation and the picture, too. I have reviewed all service control events for today and see nothing that resembles Trend crashing or any sort of virus software termination alert, etc. Are there any other places I should look?

Pamela,

Well, if Windows doesn't report a service crash, it is possible it does crash but doesn't report properly, but it is unlikely. I am left with guessing that WIndows defender conflicts with Trend Micro Internet Suite.
Try to disable Windows defender the following way:
- If you have Vista or Win7, search your computer for "services", select this in the start menu results
- a window will open list all services,
- scroll down the list and look for Windows Defender,
- right click on the service, choose properties,
- in startup options, choose disabled.
Reboot the computer.
Does it fix the issue?

I had Trend turn off again and noted the exact time. Acronis wasn't actively doing anything but the Acronis True Image Monitor is always running. This makes me less likely to suspect Acronis except for the fact that Trend has been working forever and this only started after I installed Acronis.

I looked back in the event log and saw nothing at all for the time period where Trend was turned off during this last incident.

I looked in services at Windows Defender. It was not started (I think it was not set to start because it is not needed/wanted with Trend). Nevertheless, I disabled it.

I'm running the long Malware scan. It is not finished but has finished my C drive without a problem, so I think it is not likely to find anything.

I'm off to look in the Trend forum and support to see if I can find anything there. I'll reboot in a little while too and note if the problem arises again after disabling Defender. Will report back. Meanwhile, if you think of anything else, let me know. And thanks for your input.

Eventually I was able to solve this problem by reinstalling Trend Internet Security 2012. I don't know what went wrong or whether Acronis had anything to do with it. It happened during my startup of Acronis, but who knows, LOL. At any rate, a reinstall worked, so problem solved. Thanks for the help here!!
