ATIH 2010 (Bld 7154) Rescue Disk Test

Thread needs solution

OK, I did it. I booted from the Rescue Disk I made after installing Build 7154 and all went well until I went looking for the Ext HD (USB-type) where all my backups are. It did not shown up on the "MY Computer" screen! So, I checked it out in Device Manager, and found it there ("Mass Storage") but with a yellow "!" icon showing. Selecting it and double clicking gave the message: "Cannot Start (Code 10)". I followed the trouble shooting procedures (Uninstall/Re-install) and got looped-back to "Cannot Start". I shut down, re-booted from the normal C: drive, and the Ext HD showed up fine on the "MY Computer" screen and in Device Manager!

Seems the Recovery Disk doesn't know about the Ext HD. Any one have a suggestion for what I am missing here??

Return to your registration page and download the "Bootable Media" option and burn the download onto the CD as an image. This file is an alternate Rescue CD with different drivers than the installed user created version. A good program to burn the CD is the free ImgBrn.

GroverH -- Thank you for your prompt reply. After I sent the post, I thought back to when I made the Bootable Rescue Disc. As I mentioned in the post, I'm using a USB Ext HD, and I did not have it "plugged in" (powered up) when I made the Rescue Disc!! So, no surprise the Rescue Disc did not have the driver for the Ext HD. I've made a new Rescue Disc (with the Ext HD powered-up) and the bootup from the Rescue Disc was fully successful!

So, now I've demonstrated that the Rescue Disc boots my system properly and the principal peripherals (i.e., keyboard, mouse, monitor AND Ext HD) are recognized and work, and, I have launched the ATIH program in this "recovery environment". It seems there is one last step I could/should take: actually recover some data from the backups. How should I do this without compromising the backup (or the whole system as it now stands)?

Is it as simple as selecting a data file (vs a full system backup) and recovering it to a temporary place on the c: drive??

Yes. It is that simple.
Boot from the Acronis bootable usb disk and use the file restore routine to restore one file from a full disk backup.

Select a single text files and restore the single file it to any location--such as a usb stick or anywhere you wish. If you have other externals, you may want to restore it there--just to make sure the Rescue CD sees all your disks.

Good luck.

My thanks again, Grover. I'll try that "one file restore" from a full disk backup you described. By the way, I'll assume, in your second sentence, you meant: Boot from the bootable Rescue Disc (CD) that I made -- I don't have an Acronis bootable usb disc.

Yes that is good. I just wanted to make sure you did a file restore with positive results.
