ATIH 2011 unable to open ATIH 2010 backups
I just bought and installed ATIH 2011, and am surprised that it can't open .tib files I created with 2010 (trial version). "My backups" sees the backups, but each one is yellowed out, "Cannot open the backup file"... I know these were all valid when I made them with 2010.
This is troubling on two levels:
1. the installer updated my 2010 installation, leaving me no way to work with these if I had to.
2. the website claims backward compatibility of backups from 2011 to 2010.
3. it's a backup program. it's has to be at a higher level of non-flakeyness
what's up.

thanks for replying - I know about the value of the CD, already burned the ISO. However, backup is also of course good for less disastrous situations, i.e. recovering individual files/folders - and regardless, it's not confidence-inspiring if the installed app can't see the tibs but maybe just maybe the boot cd can...
All *4*of the tib files in the screen shot I originally attached verified fine with 2010, all 4 can't be opened with 2011...
I guess I start from scratch with new backups, but like I said, not a warm fuzzy reassuring feeling...

or could it be image-level restore works but (file-level) browse/mount is broken from 2011 back to 2010 because of the time line? If this is the case, unless I missed it, it's not mentioned anywhere in the documentation...

Hello fromJC and Grover,
Thank you very much for your messages.
Grover, thank you for helping.
fromJC, I will definitely assist you.
I would like to clarify something please. Have you tried right clicking on each of the backup tabs, select Open backup location and select the corresponding backup file from your backup location. Does Acronis True Image 2011 Home detect them properly now?
If not, please collect this report and contact our Support team with a description of the issue, I am very confident that we will be able to resolve this issue.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
Thank you.

Hi
So no luck with the - I can see the drive, see the tib, it's selected, but when I com back 2011 still shows links to the backup names and says "not backed up yet" for each. When I try to click on the ATIH links, I get "Cannot open the backup file" (see my original screen shot).
So I downloaded your diagnostic tool and ran it. I noticed that the last command line message before the window closed itself said "failed to generate RSOIP report" (or something like that).
Nonetheless I'll send the zip it generated to support. Or I'll give up and try start with new (2011) backups, but again this is not reassuring.

Don't forget, the TI Rescue CD is the prime restore vehicle when performing a restore your system or system disk. If you have not done so, create the new 2011 Rescue CD. Boot with it and make sure it sees and restores your prior backups. When booted from the 2011 TI Rescue CD, it would also be prudent to validate your 2010 backups as well.
I don't agree all backup must be used for restoring the system or system disk. We do backup because we want to get back the lost data from the backup file. I also created a .tib file and now trying to upgrade the TI from 2010 to 2011, very disappointed that it was failed when I mount the .tib file. If newer version does not support the archive created from previous version, how the backup be restored? Not only the system crashed than we need the restore, sometime we need to restore the file which might be created several months or years before. If newer version is not backward compatibile, why we need to have the newer version?
I captured the error of opening 2010 .tib file from 2011.
Best regards,
Kelvin.

Hi Kelvin,
I did not mean to imply the only reason you have backups are for restoring your system. I would agree that there are many reasons to use a backup. The point I was making is that it is the Rescue CD (rather than from within Windows) which provides the best option when restoring a system to either your old disk or a new disk.
If the type of archive your are attempting to mount is a files and folders backup, that type archive can not be mounted but you can use the explore option to "copy & paste" from the archive.
If you want to restore an old archive, it is best done from the version that created the backup. While often times the current version will restore much more, t is only guaranteed to restore the recent prior version. It is a good practice to keep your old Rescue CD's and write their version, build and serial number on the label.

Dear GroverH,
Thanks for your reply. Do you mean it is the best to restore 2010 .tib with 2010 TI? If so, do we need to create another .tib with full backup when we decide to upgrade the version of TI. It is very space wasting as we need to keep more set of backup of backup on the server, although disk space is being cheaper. My concern is if newer version doesn't support the old vesrion of archieve, we may not only keep the old version of TI but we need to keep the old OS or machine as new version of Windows or machine may not support the old version of TI after several years. Any alternative way to restore the file if the Rescue CD lost?
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Kelvin,
TI 2011 should be able to see and understand TI 2010 images.
Are you able to Explore the image using Windows Explorer?
Does it validate OK?

Hi. Colin,
From the recovery, I can browse and restore file if I using the same version of TI 2010, it proves the image is validate. It was failed if I did the same in TI 2011. Please note the image was created by 2010 traditional version, does it mean the English version doesn't support traditional version image? I don't think so as the image should be the same format.
Best regards,
Kelvin.

Hi
Yeah, I just gave up - for me 2010 tibs are *not* open-able in 2011, simple as that. So I backup everything up again with 2011 - still the bad taste is left in my mouth about the files mysteriously not being readable remains (I want my backup program to be rock solid :)

fromJC,
They are because I've done it, so the question becomes what has either gone wrong in both yours and Kelvin's installation or what has gone wrong with the tib archive.
1. Are these files and folders backups or disk/partition images?
2. If images, are these one of fulls or are they incremental/differentials?
3. Like Kelvin's does yours JC validate in 2010?
4. Do they validate in TI 2011 or with the 2011 rescue CD?
5. Have you both tried a repair install of TI 2011?
6. If possible does the same thing happen if you make an image with 2011?
