ATIH 2012: First and Incremental Backups Failing: I/O device error

Thread needs solution

Running ATIH 2012, latest version.

Trying to create first backup to eSATA drive.
Windows 7 64-bit.
McAfee Anti-Virus
Standard windows features active: defender, firewall, etc.
Have attached system report and logfile.

Source: Internal Drive, 50,000+ files, 1.1 TB
Destination: 2 TB eSATA drive

After several hours:

Error occurred while writing the file

Next row in log shows:

Error occurred while writing the file. (0x40003)
function "WriteFileNoCache"
Tag" 0x7CEB2CDC9FB121D3
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error (oxFFF0)
code = 8007045D)
Tag = 0xBD28FDBD64EDB8BC.

These two entries appear three times, then then a series of entries automatically go through the process of trying to switch the destination folder, not having appropriate privileges, and then the system automatically selecting User: Cancel.

Ultimately the backup is listed as "Cancelled by User"

Hello T. Koehler,

Thank you for reporting about the issue, I'd like to help you with it.

This error usually occurs due to the hardware issue. I have checked the logs, and found the error in the event logs:

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort2.

I would suggest you to check the controller, and also disable all caсhing for the external drive, and try again.

Should the issue remains, please re-gather the logs and send it to us.

Thank you.

I've had the same issue with the i/o read error the first full backup I tried. I am running Vista SP2 and have a brand new 2 TB Seagate hard drive installed thinking that Acronis would be the best backup software since Seagate uses it to transfer OS & files from the old drive to the new one. It went without a hitch. I installed Acronis True Image Home 2012 on my desktop and laptop, and haven't got to make a backup yet. I read reviews of the different software for backup and Acronis was rated as #1 so I didn't expect problems. It looks as though several people are having this issue. Do you have any idea of what's going on. Will the software not work with the large hard drives?
