Back-Up to Flash Drives
I assembled a computer to be used strictly for internet access.
It is running XP Pro SP3, utilizing an 80GB HDD. Since I'm only
going to be using about 10GB of space on this drive, I thought
I would back up the drive to a 64GB USB flash drive, which
would provide a few sequences of back up. The flash drive is
formatted FAT32, which prevents one file from being bigger than
about 4GB. When I did a back-up, Acronis asked me to insert the
second media, which I did, which of course is simply volume two
on the same flash drive. The back up was validated by validating
first the volume one, and then I validated the volume two. Volume
one was approximately 4GB, while volume two was about 2GB. I thought
I would test this back up by disconnecting the original 80GB SATA
drive, and substituting another drive. The substitute drive was
one of two that was previously used in a RAID configuration. I was
surprised to see, that the Acronis Bootable Rescue Disk, which I
created, had no provision for formatting this drive, which I wanted
to do, to clean all the garbage off the new drive. I did however,
use Acronis Drive Cleanser to get rid of the data. Now I was
ready to restore this drive from my back-up. I started the operation,
but after the volume one was complete, Acronis appeared to hang up.
I could not properly cancel, or continue the operation. So I sort
of "pulled the plug" on the computer, and figured this operation
was not going to work.
Question: Is there a secret has to how to make this work with a
FAT32 flash drive? I thought I would format the flash drive as
XFAT, but I thought, maybe this would also confuse Acronis. Do
you think the best way to solve this problem, is simply to use
an external USB HDD, formatted NTFS, and forget about the flash
drives entirely. I have used external USB HDD's on another computer,
which of course works fine. Of course, using a 1TB external HDD to
back up 10GB, is a little overkill. I could share the HDD with
another computer, and then it wouldn't be quite so silly.
