Back Up to WD My Book question

Thread needs solution

I just started using a WD My Book today to save my backups to. I did a full back up then changed the command to do incremental from now on. The full back up shows on the My Book as "mybackup1" all the way thru "mybackup27". I've used Acronis for awhile now and on my last external hard drive it just saved one backup in one file. When I click on and look into each of these files they are all the same size and look to have the same files in them. I'm not understanding what's going on here and if I can delete all of them but one?

The WD is formatted as Fat32 which has a max file size limit of around 4 Gb. If you reformat it to NTFS you will get just the one file.

Thanks so much, I knew it had to be something easy, I can do that under disk management right?

Andrea,
Placing your trust in too many incremental type backups can be less safe. Suggest you read item 7H in my signature index. Perhaps you should consider more frequent full disk backups.

Hello all,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

Andrea,

You are able to convert FAT32 file system to NTFS without data loss using Microsoft convert.exe utility:

1. Click Start, click Programs, Accessories, and then click Command Prompt
2. At the command prompt, type CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS
3. Convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to NTFS

See Microsoft KB article for more information.

Thank you.

I reformatted my laptop and did a full backup to my 500GB WD harddrive. I'm unable to retrieve my excel files. Any suggestions?

Arden,
I am not understanding your actions.

If you formatted the laptop, this provides you with a drive with no data. A backup of the newly formatted disk means you have a backup of an empty disk.

Where is your backup of the data which you performed prior to the reformat?

Or could you have meant that you performed an Acronis Restore and the missing files were not restored? If this is the situation, then recheck your backup archive (*.tib files) and explore those files and see if you can find them.

What type of a restore did you do? Was it a files restore or a disk restore?
Was the backup archive that you restored a files backup or a disk backup.

Keep in mind that if you use a WD My Book World as a backup solution, you will not be able to restore from it as TI requires a NDAS Device ID which is not available from the world book device as a 20-character ID, nor is there a write key.

I just discovered this myself as I needed to do a restore. Yes, the data is on the My Book World device, but no vehicle to restore it to my dead PC.

Ernest,

I had the same issue when I tried to access my WD MyBook World Edition White 1TB drive from the Acronis TI 2010 Boot CD. However, after posting on the WD forum, I was able to find out that you do not need an NDAS device ID or key code. You should be able to access the WD MyBook drive via FTP access, providing you have enabled it on the web interface for the MyBook.

But the best way is by direct browsing to the MyBook after you make sure you have changed the workgroup name on the MyBook web interface to match your LAN workgroup name on your network. Once this is done, you should be able to browse to the MyBook drive via the "Computers Near Me" link in Acronis.

Btw...I really goofed when I first tried hooking up to the MyBook from the Acronis Boot CD... I assumed (and we know how that works!) that Acronis was loading WLAN drivers and I was connected via wireless. Doesn't work over wireles...at least I couldn't get it to. You must be hard wired to the LAN.

Please let me know if this helps!

Hello all,

Mr Pisky, thank you very much for reporting a workaround to us! In this particular case we have to figure out whether the issue is related to some special NAS configuration or this behavior is caused by third part factors.

Ernest, please use the workaround and access the drive via FTP (just put ftp://[NAS_IP_address]) in the address bar.

I will report this issue to our Experts and update you.

Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Regards,
