Backing up Linux ext4 partition results in HUGE .tib file...

Thread needs solution

Hi guys,

I've run into a strange issue when trying to backup a Linux ext4 partition.

The disk is a 500GB Seagate HD set up with the following partitions:

1: Windows System NTFS 40GB (23.63 GB used)
2: Linux ext4 40GB (4.5GB used)
3: Linux Swap 2GB (0GB used)
4: Data NTFS 384GB (273.5GB used)

The ext4 partition size is 40GB, of this a mere 4.5GB is used by Linux.

However, when I use TI 2015 to create a backup, the resultant .tib file
is around 33.6GB in size.

When going through the steps of creating the backup in TI 2015 it
correctly recognises that only 4.5GB is used and when selecting the
compression option (I leave it as the default) it indicates the expected
archive size will be around 2.8GB.

I've tried a couple of times, with the same result. I also used TI 2011
and it produced the same huge .tib file-size.

I was also careful to ensure that I DID NOT have the sector-by-sector
option checked.

I'm at a bit of a loss what to do next.

Any comments or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Mike.

Hmm.. GroverH mentioned (in another thread) that TI may automatically enable "sector by sector" backup. (even though the "sector by sector" backup option is unchecked?)

I've looked around but can't see anything to confirm this.

Is anyone else able to shed light on this?

Cheers,

Mike.

If your Ext4 filesystem is corrupted in some way this will cause TI to backup in sector by sector mode. Not very encouraging I know but this occurs with corrupted filesystems and non supported filesystems. You should further investigate.

Hmm... I'll have to check the FS, but I'm fairly sure it's okay.

In the past I've used TI 2011 to back up Linux partitions and it's been okay.

Cheers,

Fred.
