Backing up a NAS in diff-mode leads to enormous filesizes

The differential method means that the new backup should contain all, that differs from the last full backup.
In my case the diff-backups are as big as a full backup. It seems that ATIH recognises each file as different, but believe me, there are only a few that are new.
I'm backing up an NAS (attached to a LAN) on a different mobile disc, that is connexcted via USB3.0.
Where can I see, what ATIH leads to that wrong assumption.
