Backing up/restoring.

Thread needs solution

My laptop is an Acer 5738Z with Windows 7 Home premium and I have installed ATI Home 2010.When I installed it,I got the option to update to the latest version 13.0.6053 which I did.I get the option when backing up to:-
Flags Capacity Used Space Type
NTFS(ACER)(C:) Pri 220.1GB 31.34GB NTFS
NTFS(PQSERVICE) Pri 12.70GB 9.778GB FS:NTFSPartition0x27Unknown
NTFS(SYSTEMRESERVED) Pri,Act 100MB 29.66MB NTFS
What I want to do is have a back up so that instead of doing a destructive recovery and having to download and install all the Windows Updates again and customising my laptop again and adding all the programs again that I have put on my laptop, use this backup to restore to where I was before I had any trouble with my laptop.
I am not very experienced in computing and having read the 204 page instructions,I am still not very confident of how to do it Could anyone tell me in ordinary terms how I could do the above.I created factory default discs when I got my laptop as per instuctions I followed from Acer erecovery management so I am assuming this gave me a back up of the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system so I'm not particularly bothering about backing this up.I will be backing up to a Western Digital elements Portable Hard Drive and intend to do only full backups probably once a month but not scheduled-just when I feel like it.
I am sorry to be so long winded about it but I'm trying to convey what I want to do and give what I think is the necessary info for someone to help me.

Thank you very much for this link.It looks like a lot of interesting reading.I'll study it to try to come to all my answers I need and I hope I can come back to the forum if I've got any questions arising from it.The one I've got the now is "my version is different from the one in this link.Would this matter?"

Hi William

The screens will be different - TI made changes in 2009 and 2010 but the basics are the same

As you wish to do a simple full drive backups as needed (thats what I do) it is not too complicated.

The basics are

Build the Recovery CD
Test that the Recovery CD will see your internal and external drives and access the drives (and your keyboard and mouse will work)
Backup the entire drive using the recovery CD to the external drive.
Make sure you validate the new Tib file after backup
Test a restore either by restoring to a new test drive installed in the computer or if that is not possible by working through the restore wizard until you reach the PROCEED button (do not push proceed). See GroverH example

Come back if there are any problems

Thank you very much for all your help.I've now managed to do a back up/validate successfully although I've done it in Windows rather than in Rescue mode.I'll do one in Rescue mode at the weekend.FJust for my information, what is the best one to work with-Windows or Rescue.I realise this will sound a stupid question to you but I am not particularly knowledgeable with computers and I am trying to learn and I find it difficult to understand some of the instructions in the manual.Grover's links are much easier to understand. Thanks again.
