Backup and Restore of SecureDoc encrypted HDDs possible?

Thread needs solution

Hello folks,

does anybody know if I can backup my SecureDoc encrypted Win7 HDD and can it restore without any issues onto a new bare metal HDD in case of a desaster? I would not prefer to create HDD clones. Rather I would like to perform a normal incremental backup for Windows OS and user data.

I'm not sure if any of the Acronis products can do this?

thanks and best regards,

Eckhard

It depends. Various disk encryption software use different techniques. When you backup from Windows, Acronis will create a backup where the disk data is decrypted. You can protect the backup archive through Acronis encryption option. It is during the restore that problems can arise. Depending on how the disk encryption software manipulates the boot records, as you restore the decrypted image, your boot up might be screwed up. With bit locker, it is possible to repair the startup of the computer. Then you boot to a decrypted disk, and you just have to reencrypt it.

Short answer is that unless you find another user with the same software and the same BIOS/UEFI/MBR/GPT configuration, you won't be sure until you try.
