Backup and restore on a small drive

Thread needs solution

I want to purchase a SSD for a 4 year old laptop that I have. I would like to do a full back up of the hard drive and then restore it onto the SSD. But the SSD that I want to buy will be smaller than the hard drive on the laptop.

I can move a lot of the pictures and unnecessary files onto another storage medium and bring it below the capacity of the SSD. If I do this, can I do a full backup of the hard drive and then restore it on the SSD?

Thanks

If using a 250GB SSD, You will need to get your used space to less than 175GB (approximatgely in order to get Acronis to restore onto the SSD.

Thanks. . .I'll get the used space to less than 175GB.

Let me see if I got the steps correct:
1) Create boot disk
2) Back up old hard drive to some external drive.
3) Remove old HDD
4) Install new SSD
5) Boot from boot disk
6) Restore from external drive to SSD

Is that it?

Yes. For the type of backup, click my signature link 2A below and use the select disk mode backup.

To do the restore, use signature link 3, item #1 insdie that link.

If you have any other questions, post a screen capture of your old disk when viewed via the Window Disk Management greaphical view so we can see how the partitions are arranged and how many partitions.
