Backup from broken hardware machine?

Thread needs solution

Have not purchased Acronis yet, wanted to verify that it will solve my problem:

WinXP machine motherboard died. Boot disk still good. Want to back it up and restore to new laptop computer using the Universal Restore feature that should let it work on different hardware.

My question is this: If I mount the disk on another machine, can I create the backup from there (without booting from that disk), and then restore that to the laptop and then boot?

Thanks,
/Hank

Have you checked that there are XP drivers available for the new laptop? If there isn't, you probably won't be able to get XP running decently on it.

You should be able to make the backup with the drive connected to another computer. In any case, with the board dead, you don't have any choice.

Are you sure you want to end up with XP on your new machine? This is what will happen if you restore the backup to your new laptop. You may want to consider backing up your data and then re-installing the applications on the new machine.
