Backup causes computer restart

Thread needs solution

New computer build with Windows 7 Home Premium x64, Gigabyte motherboard and Core i5. Shortly after starting backup with either ATIH 2010 or now 2011, the computer restarts with no warning. This is repeatable every time. When I back up from the Acronis boot CD, no problem. I'm backing up to an internal SATA drive. I've tried clean boot with same results. My suspicion is a conflict with the AHCI driver, otherwise I have no idea why this happening and can't seem to isolate the cause.

Do you get a blue screen?

Are all your disks basic disks? No dynamic disks?
Did you try to uninstall, use the ACronis 2011 cleanup utiliy and reinstall?

No blue screen...just shut down and restart without any prompting or error. Nothing in Event Log other than improper shutdown.
All basic disks. Two physical hard drives.

I'll try the cleanup utility and reinstall.

Do you have your backup configured to shutdown the computer after the backup? Did you create such a backup at any point of time in the past?

Negative. Remember, this is a brand new computer that I built with a fresh Windows install. This has been going on since my first attempt at backup.

Brian,

Let's see after an install/cleanup/reinstall.

While we are at it, before you reinstall, have a look at c:\programdata\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts and make sure this folder is empty.

After uninstall/reinstall using cleanup utility, computer still restarts within 30 seconds of starting manual backup, usually causing chkdsk to run on reboot. The backup file is only a few megs and I delete it.

I checked after uninstall, and the Acronis directory was completely deleted. I'm totally stumped. Thankfully, I can backup using the boot disk.

Hello Brian and Pat!

Thank you for your comments! Pat, thanks a lot for your help.

Dear Brian, I assume that the conlict is caused by the low-level drivers conflict, but cannot be sure due to the lack of sufficiant investigation information. Could you please provide us with the following information?

  1. Whether the machine restarts if you run the backup automatically
  2. Dump file
  3. Acronis Info

This data will shed the light to the situation, and help us to localize the issue.

Should you have any additional questions or concerns, please, share them with us, we will be glad to assist you.

Thank you!
