Backup directory runs out of space

Thread needs solution

I use the rules/policies all the time for consolidation of backups on my backup drive. This approach appears to work very effectively.  After this though I must be doing something wrong because I cannot work out a way for old images to be deleted before I eventually run out of space on my backup drive. As I understand it, all the rules do is if one of the policies is met, Acronis starts consolidating the backups into one image until the policies are "not met" again. I cannot see any way of actually having a policy that will DELETE old images before you run out of space. For me at least, this becomes a manual intervention to delete old backups BUT we have multiple licenses and I can't be everywhere at once to check the status of everybody's backup drives/(directories). Given that the object of policies and rules is to automate the backup process, there must be something that I am missing that will ensure that running out of space never happens.

Please help!

The only way with 2009 to not run out of space is to have consolidation or delete old archives run at an earlier point. Possibly at a guesstimated size of the largest image plus a few GB's as TI will need at least that space to consolidate, and exactly that space to make an image and then delete the older one.

I won't meantion competitive products names, however both of them automatically consolidate and then delete old backup sets once they get to a nominated size. I see this as a minimal requirement for the product. The other problem is that the backup only actually fails with a message once. If the message is missed the no more messages are posted for days after the initial failure. The only way you can tell if there is a problem is by looking at the task log.

This is basic stuff that should be addressed.

Hello Christopher,

Thank you for using Acronis Products

Thanks for your comments regarding automatic consolidation. I would recommend you to have a look at the following article. It is devoted to batch files and how to automatically manage backup files saved to a local disk. Using this batch file you will be able to schedule a set of certain number of full + incremental/differential backup archives. I’m sure it will resolve the issues you face.

Thank you for posting this script. I was thinking about doing such a thing myself so it is always good when somebody does all the work for me :). Lets hope this becomes a standard feature in the next release.

Regards,

Chris h
