Backup fails due to external hard drive (destination) has been remapped

Thread needs solution

I am getting this error during my backup using Acronis True Image 2013:
"Failed to exclusively access backup F:\HP Laptop Backups\HP_Laptop_Incremental_inc_b2_s5_v1.tib during consolidation. Make sure the backup file is not opened in other applications."

The external drive F that is my destination drive for the backups no longer exists, and is now mapped to G. I have done everything I can to delete all my backups (tib files and backup schedules), and create new ones, but this problem still persists. I found this in the registry in the folder: True Image 2013 by Acronis \ Recent Destinations. There are three entries, one with the F:\HP Laptop Backups, one for G:\HP Laptop Backups (this is the correct one) and one for (value not set).

Is it safe to delete all three entries in the registry, or only the F drive or is there a better solution?

Have you tried creating a new backup task which points to the new drive letter storage folder. Editing an existing backup is not encouraged as the edits usually do not work as expected.

Now also might be good time to use Windows Disk Management and remove drive letter G and assign a new letter such as x or y or z. Then create the new task as above using a higher lettter as the target drive.

Changing the letter to x or y or z would eliminate the cause of the prior problem as then the insertion of a flash drive or camera ,etc would not affect your backup tasks.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, that's exactly what I did. I created a whole new backup task and deleted everything related to the old backup. Parts of the backup work....but it's just the part I quoted that is still pointing to the old drive. Is there any harm, though, in deleting the registry entry where I see the old drive mapped? That would be SOOOO much simpler than reconfiguring a whole new backup.

Hello everyone,

I had some issues with a drive and using Acronis TI 2014. I removed the backup and initiated a new back up to the same drive with a new path. The issue is the backup almost completes to the new path and then tries to write to the old folder that is no longer on the drive? You will see the \\NOWIRES\sda1 below which is the issue. I need to stop having acronis looking for SDA1.. I have tried everything including deleting all backups and formatting drives. It seems somewhere in the software or registry it is looking for it.

\\NO-WIRES\sda1\Acronis Win 8.1 Home Office\OS_(C)_inc_b21_s4_v1.tib

Failed to exclusively access backup \\NO-WIRES\sda1\Acronis Win 8.1 Home Office\OS_(C)_inc_b21_s4_v1.tib during consolidation. Make sure the backup file is not opened in other applications.

Is the .tib file you indicate above the backup that you removed? I suspect so. In that case do a file search for archives.xml. In Windows 7 that file is located in %ALLUSERSPROFILE%/Acronis/TrueImageHome/Database/archives.xml. Once found rename the file such as archives.xml.old. Once renamed exit and reboot machine.

This will cause Acronis to rebuild the backup archives database which it uses to track backups and should fix your problem.

Hello

Thank you as that fixed the issue!!

Now, on my laptop is a different story. Same issue and running windows 8.1 64 bit I can not find the file as I did in my 32Bit machine? any suggestions?

Bring up the Windows 8.1 search box and type in archives.xml. Check the path to the file for it's location.
