Backup list (catalog) gets mangled

As backups get executed, the backup list grows and the single backup I had defined becomes various dissociated backup entries. For example, if I define a backup called "Files", after a few days I see backups in the list called "Files", "Files7", "Files(1)", "Files(2)", etc... In the backup list! I don't mean in the file folder. So the single backup I had defined becomes multiple backups, and they become impossible to manage (for example the option to automatically delete older backup versions no longer works).
This happens for file backups as well as for partition backups, and it happens at random times.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?
