Greetings rene morin,

Thank you for joining us here on the Forum, I will be very glad to assist you with your request.

To perform fortnightly scheduled backups of your entire disk on which your system resides, and to preserve only a single version of these backups, please follow the simple steps numbered below:

1) First of all, after starting up Acronis True Image Home 2012, on the mainscreen please proceed to "Backup up System".

2) You should see a window show up with several options. As you wish to backup your entire computer keep all the settings as they are for the "Source" options.

3) Specify the location or device if any where you would like to store your backups from the "Destination" drop-down menu. It is not recommended that you backup your hard disk to itself, as a recovery operation may not be possible in the event of a system failure.

4) Below the "Destination" section, you can see the option to "Turn on" scheduled backups. Please choose this option to enable the "Schedule" of your backup task.

5) You will see an additional window appear to specify the schedule dates, and the frequency of backup operations that you choose to be carried out. Since your preference is for backups to be performed on the first and fifteenth of every month, please select the "Monthly" radio-button, and in turn, the radio-button "On" to specify on which days of the month the tasks will initialise. Now you may select the first and the fifteenth from the calendar view and hit "OK".

6) For the "Cleanup Rules", please click on the underlined Backup Scheme "Incremental" that is set by default. This will bring up another window with a diversity of Backup Schemes and their corresponding configurations. Depending on the Backup Scheme and Backup Method, you will have different Cleanup options to choose from.

- If you prefer the Incremental or Differential Backup Method, you may choose Incremental Scheme or Differential Scheme from the topmost drop-down. These methods differ from a Full Backup Method, as they build on top of an initial Full backup, and they backup the changes since the previous Incremental backup or the initial Full backup in the case of Differential. Incremental and Differential Backup Methods differ among themselves, you may refer to a detailed explanation of the differences between the two and the advantages they each provide.

- If you prefer to have Full backups, you may simply opt for the Custom Scheme and specify Full as the Backup Method. You will have a Full backup performed every fortnight, so make sure to set a suitable time for the scheduler as the operation may be resource-intensive and take awhile depending on the size your system occupies on your hard disk.

7) From the previous step, if you chose to perform an Incremental Backup Scheme or a Differential Backup Scheme, you will have to specify the Consolidation settings to keep your desired number of backups. On the other hand, for the Full Backup Method (through Custom Backup Scheme) you can set the settings for the Cleanup Rules, so that -in your case- only a certain number of backups will be kept.

-Incremental/Differential Backup Scheme: click on "Automatic consolidation settings" at the bottom right-hand corner of the window, and check the very first box "Number of backup versions exceed" and subsequently, specifying "2" as the limit to your stored backups.

-Custom Backup Scheme; Full Backup Method: choose to "Turn on automatic cleanup" and select the second radio-button, "Store no more than 2 recent versions".

These steps are sufficient to satisfy your needs as you have stated in your post above. However, you may refer to our Knowledge Base article and our Web-Help guide for much more information on the diverse Backup Schemes and Backup Methods to choose from, and make changes as you see fit.

Please feel free to contact me directly by sending me a PM if you do have any questions or issues with your Backup tasks and their respective Schedule options, or for any other additional questions concerning any of our products or services.

Best,

Rene

It sounds like your backups may differ in their contents.
If the backup contents differ, then you should set up a specific task for each backup. It sounds like you want full type backups so my suggestion would be a custom full type backup. Figure 11-Full inside the reference link is an illustration. Adjust the 4 "recent versions" to your retention needs.

My suggestion would be to at least one of your ongoing backups should be a "disk mode" backup to include the entire contents of the system disk. Having an image of the entire disk would enable you to create a replacement disk--should there be a need. This is illustrated in Figure 5 of the reference.

My experience has been that maintaining as many backups as my storage space allows offers the most choices when a file or disk needs to be restored. Often times, when trouble arises, it is the older backups which help the most rather than newer backups. So my recommendation is to retain more than just 1 backup file--even it means buying an additional backup storage drive.
