Backup Size

I've been using Acronis for a few months to back up my OS and Projects drives. Its been performing a full backup every 30 days and incremental backups every day. My OS drive has about 200GB and my projects drive has about 500GB in it. The drive that I'm backing up to is 1TB. Today the backup got stuck because the backup drive was full. I saw that there were 2 full backups and all the incremental ones. I'm assuming that today was the 30th day where it does the full backup. My question is, does if only delete the old one and increment files once the new one is done? Would this mean that I need twice the capacity of what I'm actually backing up for this process where it has both files? Does this mean that I need a 2TB drive to backup 200GB + 500GB? Or have I set up something incorrectly?
