Backup from SSD to HDD becomes very large

Thread needs solution

Can anyone advise if it is normal for a backup (partition and whole drive - I just asked for C:) from an SSD which is 90.6 Gb Used space (of a total 240 (223) Gb Drive. to take up 439+Gb when backed up to HDD? I redid it and it was the same size, seems odd and I hope will somehow fit back on the SSD if the need to restore ever arises.

No it's not. The backup should be about the same size or, usually smaller, than the bytes in use on your source drive. Are you ding a Disk Mode backup?

Recheck what is being included in the backup. Maybe other added disks are being included? Browse the backup and view some of its directory tree contents.

If you did the backup from the recovery CD, note that ATI from the CD shows drive letters different from in Windows. You may have backed up another disk carrying the letter C:\ on the CD and another letter in Windows.

Had a much closer look at config for Backup / partition and you were right it was selecting more than one drive.
Under Configure Disk Baackup Process ther is an option for "Multiple Partitions Selection". I had NOT gone in there but when I looked it was auto selecting multiple drives which I DID NOT need to BU. Now all happy just backing up C- which only has programmes. DATA is on my NAS with RAID 5 enabled
Thanks for the pointers.
