Backup Successful, but actually failed to save files

Thread needs solution

TIM 2012

In spite of the logs showing a warning that some of the files were not backed up, Acronis reported that the backup SUCCEEDED !!!

So without carefully reading every line in the log file after a backup completes, I cannot trust that my files were actually backed up :-(

I have been very frustrated with problems lately. Something in the configuration got corrupted, so it was saving backups using the filenames for other backup tasks ! Each individual chain became a separate backup task too. What a mess.

So I uninstalled, and installed everything to start from scratch.

Things are still not working correctly. I tested by manually starting the backup and it went fine.

However, the automatic backup that started at 4:00am was still running this afternoon (normally takes 5 minutes). This is a File Backup, Full. The TIM window showed the task was still running, calculating the estimated time to completion.

It showed that what it was doing was Cloning, which is a status I have never seen before and very odd, since this was a file backup.

In the logs, I see a message "Failed to create snapshot for backup". For some reason, the Windows Shadow Copy service was not running. I have turned that on, which should allow it to work in future.

I have Validate turned on. Not knowing that the files were correctly copied is a big concern.

The log only marked the failed file save as a Warning !

Sounds like you are having a bunch of issues. Maybe it would help if you either ran the REPAIR INSTALL or did an uninstall and reinstall, plus start over with new tasks pointing a new storage folders or sub-folders.

I have Validate turned on. Not knowing that the files were correctly copied is a big concern.

Validation only validates that the tib file was correctly created or is without corruption. Validation does NOT compare the copy of the file on the disk with the copy in the backup--only that the data was read and then written the same as read..

If you have not done so in a while, it could be safe precation to check all partitons on your disk for disk or file errors.

To do a repair install, restart the instal file (also available from your personal Acronis web account) and the repair option will be offered at the very beginning. A repair install will overwrite the existing install with fresh file copies.

Frankly, as for backup types, I do go in much for the file backup but would rather do a backup of the entire disk so if I have any file or disk problems, I can create a replacment disk or overlay the existing disk with a recent copy from my recent. The type backup which offers the best safety is the "disk image" or "disk mode" backup which includes all partitions on the disk. Look at link 2 below and the very first illustrtion shows the "switch to disk mode" option. The picture is 2013 but very close to the 2012 version.

If you are performing a File backup and including all files on the disk, the file backup will take longer than a disk image backup. A lot of the time is involvled in validation. The more tib backup files on the chain, the longer the validation. Is any of your files labelled as incremental ?
