backup versions

As my backups proceed, they cycle through groups:
MyBackup.tib
MyBackup2.tib
etc., then
MyBackup(1).tib
MyBackup(1)2.tib
etc.
The first backup in each set is huge, then follow the incremental ones.
My question is, can I delete all the backups that precede the start of the current set, in order to free up space?
